Nana (1926 Film)
''Nana'' is a 1926 French silent film, silent drama film directed by Jean Renoir and starring Catherine Hessling, Werner Krauss and Jean Angelo. It was Renoir's second full-length film and is based on Nana (novel), the 1880 novel by Émile Zola. It was shot at the Bavaria Studios in Munich and the Neuilly Studios in Paris. The film's sets were designed by the art director Claude Autant-Lara. Plot The story takes place during the Second French Empire, Second Empire in France. Nana, a theatre actress, puts on light-hearted plays that the Parisian bourgeoisie come to see. Thanks to her success with men, she becomes a rich and adored courtesan, so much so that she leaves the stage and is maintained. One young man even commits suicide to keep Nana's favour. Jean Renoir
Jean Renoir (; 15 September 1894 – 12 February 1979) was a French film director, screenwriter, actor, producer and author. His '' La Grande Illusion'' (1937) and '' The Rules of the Game'' (1939) are often cited by critics as among the greatest films ever made. In 2002, he was ranked fourth on the BFI's '' Sight & Sound'' poll of the greatest directors. Among numerous honours accrued during his lifetime, he received a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award in 1975. Renoir was the son of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir and the uncle of the cinematographer Claude Renoir. With Claude, he made '' The River'' (1951), the first color film shot in India.
