Nala Damayanthi (1959 Film)
''Nala Damayanthi'' is a 1959 Indian Tamil language film produced and directed by Kemparaj Urs. The film stars Kemparaj Urs and P. Bhanumathi. The film was originally made in Telugu with the same title and was released in 1957. Plot Based on a story from the Vana Parva of Mahabharata. Damayanthi is the princess of Vidarbha Kingdom. Nala is the king of Nishadha Kingdom. He is an excellent cook. They love and marry each other and beget two children. But soon they undergo hardships due to Nala losing his kingdom in a game of dice. They get separated but Damayanthi is found and joins her father with her two children. Nala is bitten by a snake and becomes a dwarf. Damayanthi arranges for a fake swayamwara to find her husband. Nala, as a dwarf, attends the ceremony with his master. Damayanthi recognizes him from the food he prepared. Nala is restored to his former self and the couple are reunited. Cast *P. Kemparaj Urs
D. Kemaparaj Urs (5 February 1917 – 18 May 1982) was an Indian freedom fighter, actor, director and producer who worked mainly in the Kannada film industry. His movies in 1940s and 1950s created an impact on the audience. Even before Dr. Rajkumar's arrival to the industry, Urs was already an established star. His elder brother D. Devaraj Urs, served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Personal life Kemparaj Urs was born in Kallahalli, Hunsur taluk in Mysore to Devaraj Urs and Deveerammanni. His elder brother was D. Devaraj Urs. Kemparaj was an English literature student. He married his classmate ''Lalitha'' and had three daughters. Urs aspired to be a doctor but inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and joined freedom struggle and jailed even. The Vidarbha Kingdom in the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata is among the many kingdoms ruled by Yadu kings (Bhoja Yadavas). It was situated in the region still known as Vidarbha in what is now Maharashtra in the Deccan. Damayanti, the wife of Nala was the princess of Vidarbha. Papanasam Sivan
Paapanaasam Raamayya Sivan (26 September 1890 – 1 October 1973) was an Indian composer of Carnatic music and a singer. He was awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1971. He was also a film score composer in Kannada cinema as well as Tamil cinema in the 1930s and 1940s. Sivan was also known as Tamil Thyaagaraja. Using Classical South Indian as a base, Sivan created compositions popularised by M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, D. K. Pattammal, and M. S. Subbulakshmi. Nala
Nala (Sanskrit: नल) is a character in the '' Vana Parva'' book of the ''Mahabharata''. He was the king of Nishadha Kingdom and the son of Veerasena. Nala was known for his skill with horses and for his culinary expertise. He married princess Damayanti, of the Vidarbha Kingdom. He was blessed by goddess Kali. He was also a great cook and wrote the first-ever book on cookery, Pakadarpanam (Sanskrit: पाकदर्पण). Even today, a consistently good chef/cook is credited as someone with Nala-Bhagam to mean that their dish tastes as if Nala has prepared it. ''Damayanti'' (Sanskrit: दमयंती) is a character in a love story found in the Vana Parva book of the Mahabharata. She was the daughter of Bhima (not the Pandava one) and a princess of the Vidarbha Kingdom, who married King Nala of the Nishadha Kingdom. The character is also found in other Hindu texts by many authors in numerous Indian languages.
