''Kabunakama'' (株仲間) were merchant guilds in Edo period Japan, which developed out of the basic merchants' associations known as '' nakama''. The ''kabunakama'' were entrusted by the shogunate to manage their respective trades, and were allowed to enjoy a monopoly in their given field. Some ''kabunakama'', known as ''gomen-kabu'', were even allowed to set prices and manage the operations of other ''nakama''. Though the shogunate originally opposed monopolies, they eventually gave in to the increasing numbers and organization of merchants' associations, and decided to make an attempt to control them by officially licensing them. In 1721, the government began to authorize individual ''nakama'' to become ''kabunakama'' (''kabu'' refers to "shares", though these were themselves not tradeable), and to oversee the organization and trade within given fields. Christian Meaas Svendsen
Christian Meaas Svendsen (born 26 February 1988) is a Norwegian jazz bassist. He has worked with Nakama, Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit, Mopti, Momentum, Aksiom, Ayumi Tanaka Trio and Duplex. He runs Nakama Records. Career Svendsen started his jazz career within Kongsberg Big Band, was a year at Toneheim folkehøgskole and later studied Performing jazz music at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in Oslo where he did a bachelor in both jazz/improv and classical music. During his years at NMH he studied under Bjørn Kjellemyr and Dan Styffe. He also exchanged to Cologne where he studied under Dieter Manderscheid, Sebastian Gramss and Dietmar Fuhr. In 2007 he was awarded Kongsberg Jazzfestival's talent scholarship. Ayumi Tanaka
Ayumi Tanaka (born 1986) is a Japanese pianist and composer, known for numerous albums with Norwegian and international jazz musicians. Education Tanaka moved to Norway in 2011, and got her education at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where she finished her master's degree as a performing jazz musician, after studies with Misha Alperin, Ivar Antonsen, Helge Lien and others. Career Tanaka is acclaimed for her own trio with the bass player Christian Meaas Svendsen and the drummer Per Oddvar Johansen. The group released their debut album ''Memento'' in January 2016.
