Nahiku, Hawaii
Nāhiku is a small unincorporated community in eastern Maui, Hawaii. Nāhiku is located along the Hana Road on the way to Hana at . Village has two parts: Upper Nāhiku closer to the road and Lower Nāhiku near the ocean shore. Nāhiku is usually reached by Nāhiku Road coming down from the Hana Road to Opuhano Point on Honolulunui Bay. The wooden bridge to the Nāhiku ocean shore within the last half mile of the road was closed to motor vehicles in 2014. Hana Road
The Hana Highway (colloquially referred to as The Road to Hana) is a stretch of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. To the east of Kalepa Bridge, the highway continues to Kipahulu as Hawaii Route 31 (the Piilani Highway). Although Hana is only about from Kahului, an uninterrupted car-trip takes about 2.5 hours to drive, since the highway is very winding, narrow, and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hana, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. That one bridge, badly damaged by erosion, was temporarily replaced by a portable steel ACROW or Bailey bridge erected by the United States Army Corps of Engineers until a permanent replacement was built in 2009. Hāna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 1,526 at the 2020 census. Hāna is located at the eastern end of the island of Maui and is one of the most isolated communities in the state. It is reached mainly via the Hana Highway, a long, winding, highway along Maui's northern shore, via boat, and with commercial air service to Hana Airport. History Like most of Hawaii, Hāna was probably first settled between 500 and 800 AD by Polynesian peoples. The first sugarcane plantation in the area was established by George Wilfong in 1849, and by 1883 there were six plantations operating in the area. By 1946, however, the last sugarcane plantation had closed, leading plantation workers to move mostly to the west side of Maui.
