NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship (Halifax Version)
The City of Halifax, Halifax version of the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship was first defended in the Eastern Sports Association only in 1977, the year the promotion closed. The title was ''imported'' from George Cannon (wrestler), George Cannon's 'Superstars of Wrestling (Canadian TV series), Canadian Wrestling' based in Ontario. In late 2012, Atlantic Canadian Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance formed a partnership to create NWA Atlantic Canada. The NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship (Halifax/Maritimes) will be used as the company's top championship. An eight-man tournament was held beginning in March 2013 to crown the first NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion (Halifax/Maritimes) since 1977. On April 5, 2013, JB Havoc won the NWA Canadian Heavyweight title in a record setting 29 seconds, which is credited with being the quickest title match in the history of the National Wrestling Alliance. Eastern Sports Association
The Eastern Sports Association, often referred to in the business simply as "the Maritimes," was a Canadian professional wrestling promotion based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It ran during the spring and summer months from 1969 to 1976. History The ESA, a member of the National Wrestling Alliance (1975–76), was owned by Al Zinck in partnership with Rudy Kay (1969–75) and Bobby Kay (1975-76) and promoted wrestling under the marquee name International Wrestling. In 1977, the ESA dissolved and Bobby Kay formed Trans-Canada Wrestling, and Al Zinck continued to promote International Wrestling under the name 'Maritime International Sports Ltd' with George Cannon and later Don Carson as bookers. George Cannon (wrestler)
George Arnold McCarther (March 28, 1932 – July 1, 1994), better known as George "Crybaby" Cannon, was a Canadian professional wrestler and manager, best known as the manager of the Fabulous Kangaroos. Professional wrestling career Growing up, Cannon was interested in hockey, baseball, football, boxing and lacrosse. He spent some time in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He began wrestling in Japan in 1953. He wrestled for a while in Canada beginning in 1955, left for a time, and returned for good in 1959. Cannon got the nickname "Crybaby" from his ability to wipe sweat from his face, making it look as though he were weeping. In 1968, Cannon won a tournament to win the NWA "Beat the Champ" Television Championship. Superstars of Wrestling, also sometimes known as the Canadian Wrestling Association, was an internationally syndicated Canadian professional wrestling television program. Based in Windsor, Ontario, the show ran live events in Eastern Canada and the Great Lakes region of the United States from 1975 to 1984. The show was created by George "Crybaby" Cannon after the close of Eddie Einhorn's International Wrestling Association, which had attempted to become the first-ever national wrestling promotion. Cannon, who served as the IWA's booker, brought in many of its former stars during the show's early years. The group also used wrestlers from NWA Big Time Wrestling in Detroit throughout the 1970s. Moondog King
Edward John White (May 18, 1949 – August 26, 2005) was a Canadian professional wrestler, best known as Sailor White and as Moondog King of The Moondogs (professional wrestling), The Moondogs when he joined the World Wrestling Federation in the early-1980s. White won championships in Canada and around the globe. He also wrestled in South Africa as Big John Strongbo. Steve Travis (wrestler)
Steve Al Musulin (December 13, 1950 – August 10, 2018) was an American professional wrestler and artist. He worked for the World Wrestling Federation and Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in the late 1970s and early 1980s under the ring name Steve Travis. Professional wrestling career Musulin attended Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina where he played football. After graduating from college, he began wrestling in 1976. He wrestled as Stonewall Jackson in Tennessee, Ohio and the Canadian Maritimes before making his debut in the World Wrestling Federation in 1978. David Schultz (professional Wrestler)
David Schultz (born June 1, 1955) is an American retired professional wrestler. Nicknamed "Dr. D", he competed in North American regional promotions Stampede Wrestling, the National Wrestling Alliance, and the American Wrestling Association in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
