NPOL
The Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory or NPOL is a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), under the Ministry of Defence, India. It is situated in Thrikkakara, Kochi, Kerala. NPOL is responsible for the research and development of sonar systems, technologies for underwater surveillance, study of ocean environment and underwater materials. History The Indian Naval Physical Laboratory (INPL) was established in Kochi by the Indian Navy in 1952. It worked initially as a field laboratory for fleet support activities. It was merged with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958 and started working on underwater systems. INPL was rechristened as Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL). Till 1990, NPOL functioned from within the Naval Base in Kochi. In 1990, it moved into a new campus at Thrikkakara, a suburb of Kochi. The new campus has a main technical complex and two residential complexes - SAGAR and VARUNA. ...

USHUS (sonar)
USHUS is an Integrated Submarine Sonar System developed by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It has been developed for use in submarines of the Indian Navy, especially for Sindhughosh-class submarines. Some reports also suggest that ''Arihant''-class nuclear ballistic missile submarines are also equipped with USHUS system. USHUS replaces Russian systems like MGK-400 and MGK-519 sonars on Indian submarines. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, abbreviated as GRSE, is one of India's leading defence shipyards, located in Kolkata. It builds and repairs commercial and naval vessels. GRSE also exports the ships that the company builds. Founded in 1884 as a small privately-owned company on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, it was renamed as ''Garden Reach Workshop'' in 1916. DRDO
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is an agency under the Department of Defence Research and Development in the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India, charged with the military's research and development, headquartered in New Delhi, India. It was formed in 1958 by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation under the administration of Jawaharlal Nehru. INS ''Sagardhwani'' (A74) (Hindi : सागरध्वनि - ''Voice of the Sea'') is a marine Acoustics, acoustic Research vessel, research ship (MARS) owned by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory, and is maintained and operated by the Indian Navy, and based at Southern Naval Command, Kochi. The ship was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata, launched in May 1991, and commissioned in 1994. It is similar in design to the Sandhayak-class survey ships, ''Sandhayak''-class survey ships, but with the superstructure positioned amidships and a helipad forward.
