NOJHL
The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) is a Junior ice hockey league with eleven teams in Northeastern Ontario and Upper Michigan. The league is a constituent member of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and is governed by the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. Teams compete to win the league championship Copeland Cup – McNamara Trophy, with the winning team advancing to the national championship to compete for the Centennial Cup. The NOJHL was established in 1978 with six teams: the Espanola Eagles, Espanola Eagles (1978–1988), Capreol Hawks, Capreol Hawks (1978–1986), Nickel Centre Native Sons, Nickel Centre Native Sons (1978–1984), Onaping Falls Huskies, Onaping Falls Huskies (1978–1983), Rayside-Balfour Canadians (1978–1986) and Sudbury Cubs, Sudbury Cubs (1978–1982). Hearst Lumberjacks
The Hearst Lumberjacks are a Junior ice hockey#Junior A, Junior "A" ice hockey team from Hearst, Ontario, Canada. They are a part of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). As the Powassan Hawks, the team won two Dudley Hewitt Cups (1992 and 1993). History In 2002, the year after the Ontario Hockey League's North Bay Centennials moved to Saginaw, Michigan, North Bay bought the Sturgeon Falls Lynx. The team was known as the North Bay Skyhawks from 2002 to 2009. In the summer of 2009, the team was renamed the Trappers in the memory of the NOJHA's North Bay Trappers (1962–1982). Sturgeon Falls Lynx The Powassan Hawks relocated to Sturgeon Falls, Ontario to be known as the Sturgeon Falls Lynx for the 1994–95 season. 2024–25 NOJHL Season
The 2024–25 NOJHL season was the 47th season of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). The Greater Sudbury Cubs finished the regular season in first place, won the league championship Copeland Cup – McNamara Trophy for the second year in a row and went on to represent the NOJHL at the Junior A national championship tournament in Calgary, Alberta. Lucas Signoretti of the Greater Sudbury Cubs became the second player to be named league MVP two seasons in a row. The other was Marty Reynolds of the North Bay Trappers (1962–1982) in the 1964–65 and 1965–66 seasons. Darryl Moxam, Head Coach of the Greater Sudbury Cubs, was named Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. The league decided that matches that were tied after regulation time would play a 7-minute sudden-death overtime period. If neither team would score a goal in overtime, the game ended in a tie. Rayside-Balfour Canadians (1978–1986)
The Greater Sudbury Cubs are a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Sudbury, Ontario. They are a part of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). History The Sudbury Northern Wolves came into the league in 2000 and were present up until they announced an affiliation agreement with the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves midway through the 2005–06 season. The Sudbury Northern Wolves were then re-branded as the Sudbury Jr. Wolves. The team went on to break league records that season. In their first season, the Jr. Wolves won the NOJHL championship over their rivals North Bay Skyhawks. The Jr. Wolves came one goal short of qualifying for the Royal Bank Cup losing to the Fort William North Stars 7–6 in overtime scored by former Sudbury Northern Wolves player, Josh Slobodian. Elliot Lake Vikings (2014)
The Elliot Lake Vikings are an inactive Junior "A" ice hockey franchise in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) based out of Elliot Lake, Ontario. The team played its home games at the Elliot Lake Centennial Arena until "structural concerns" forced the building to close in 2023. In 2024, the team announced that it was taking a leave of absence for the remainder of the 2024–25 NOJHL season. History The franchise was established in 2014 as an expansion known as the Elliot Lake Wildcats. This followed the relocation of the former Elliot Lake Bobcats to Cochrane, Ontario to become the Cochrane Crunch. Nathan Hewitt, a former junior coach in the Central Canada Hockey League was chosen as the team's first coach. Iroquois Falls Storm
The Iroquois Falls Storm are a Canadian Junior "A" Hockey team based out of Iroquois Falls, Ontario, Canada. They currently play in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League and are former members of the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League. The team was originally known as the ''Elliot Lake Bobcats'' in Elliot Lake, Ontario, until the 2014–15 season; where they moved to Cochrane, Ontario as the ''Cochrane Crunch'' until their move to Iroquois Falls in 2023. Dudley Hewitt Cup
The Dudley-Hewitt Cup is a championship ice hockey trophy awarded to the Central Canadian Junior A champion. The trophy is currently decided by round robin tournament format, at the conclusion of the playoffs of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, and Superior International Junior Hockey League, to determine the central representative at the Centennial Cup, the national Junior A championship. The current format includes the champions of the OJHL, NOJHL, and SIJHL and a pre-selected host city, but in the past has included the champions of the Central Canada Hockey League, Quebec Junior Hockey League, and even the champion of the Callaghan Cup. The Espanola Eagles (aka Espanola Screaming Eagles) were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team. The team was coached for eighteen years by Red McCarthy who then managed it for another four. Espanola Paper Kings
The Espanola Paper Kings are a Canadian Junior "A" ice hockey team based out of Espanola, Ontario. They are members of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) and play their home games at the Espanola Regional Recreational Complex. History The Express were one of two expansion teams that entered the league prior to the start of the 2015–16 season. The team hired former NHL forward Tom McCarthy as its first head coach. McCarthy had previously coached the Espanola Rivermen prior to the teams disbandment. The team played its first game on September 11, 2015, losing at home 4-1 to the Rayside-Balfour Canadians before a crowd of 346. Nickel Centre Native Sons
The Nickel Centre Native Sons were a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Garson, Ontario, Canada. This defunct hockey team was a part of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League History The Native Sons originated in the NOHA Jr. B League. In their time in the league, Nickel Centre won two McNamara Cups as league champions, 1979 and 1987. In 1987, the team did something that no other NOJHL team was able to do.
