NME Awards 2012
The NME Awards 2012 were held in London, England, on 29 February 2012, at the Brixton Academy and was hosted by English comedian Jack Whitehall. The nominations were announced exclusively on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show on 30 January 2012. Brixton Academy
Brixton Academy (originally known as the Astoria Variety Cinema, previously known as Carling Academy Brixton, currently named O2 Academy Brixton as part of a sponsorship deal with the O2 brand) is a mid-sized concert venue located in South London, in the Lambeth district of Brixton. Opening in 1929 as a Movie theater, cinema, the venue was converted into a discotheque in 1972, then reborn as a concert hall in 1983. It is owned by the Academy Music Group (AMG), and has become one of London's leading music venues, hosting over #Albums recorded at Brixton, 50 live albums, and winning the NME Best Venue 12 times since 1994. It has been home to several notable performances, including The Smiths' last gig (December 1986), Leftfield's June 1996 concert which set a decibel record for a live gig at 137db, and Madonna's gig in 2000, which was watched by an online audience of 9 million. Florence And The Machine
Florence and the Machine (stylised as Florence + the Machine) are an English indie rock band formed in London in 2007 by lead vocalist Florence Welch, keyboardist Isabella Summers, guitarist Rob Ackroyd, drummer Christopher Lloyd Hayden and harpist Tom Monger. The BBC played a large part in their rise to prominence by promoting Florence and the Machine as part of ''BBC Music Introducing''. At the 2009 Brit Awards, they received the Brit Awards "Critics' Choice" award. ''Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'' is the debut studio album by English Rock music, rock band Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Released on 17 October 2011, it is the first studio album released by frontman Noel Gallagher since his departure from Oasis (band), Oasis in August 2009 and the group's eventual dissolution. Background ''Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'' was recorded between 2010 and 2011 in London and Los Angeles, and produced by Gallagher and former Oasis producer Dave Sardy. ''Skying'' is the third studio album by British band The Horrors. The album was released on 11 July 2011 in the UK and on 9 August 2011 in the USA on XL Recordings. Background and recording Recorded by the group in their self-built London studio, it is the first album they produced themselves. Two months prior to its release, the song "Still Life" was premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show, where it was played in its entirety and named as his "Hottest Record in the World". This was the first track to be released from the album and the first indicator to fans of the direction the album would take. Style The album's sound was noted as including elements of post-punk revival, neo-psychedelia and shoegazing. Suck It And See
''Suck It and See'' is the fourth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 6 June 2011 by Domino Recording Company. The album's songs were written by frontman Alex Turner in 2010 on an acoustic guitar in his, at the time, Brooklyn home. It was produced in Los Angeles at Sound City Studios by the band's longtime collaborator James Ford in early 2011, using mostly live takes (as opposed to overdubbing). The album's title, a British phrase meaning "give it a try", was viewed as provocative in the United States due to being misinterpreted as referencing fellatio, and was subsequently censored in some locations. The artwork features the album title in black over a cream coloured background. Musically, ''Suck It and See'' represents a departure for the band following the darker sound of its predecessor '' Humbug'' (2009), instead featuring a lighter guitar pop and psychedelic pop sound. Two Door Cinema Club are a British rock band formed in Bangor, County Down, Bangor, Northern Ireland in 2007. Pulp (band)
Pulp are a British rock band formed in Sheffield in 1978. At their critical and commercial peak, the band consisted of Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Russell Senior (guitar, violin), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Nick Banks (drums, percussion), Steve Mackey (bass) and Mark Webber (guitar, keyboards). The band's " kitchen sink drama" lyrics, coupled with its references to British culture, led to Cocker and Pulp becoming reluctant figureheads of the Britpop movement. Tribes (band)
Tribes are a British four-piece indie rock band, based in Camden Town, London, England, that formed in 2010. The group consists of former Operahouse members Johnny Lloyd (vocals and guitar), Dan White (guitar) and Jim Cratchley (bass), along with White's childhood friend, Miguel Demelo (drums). Foster The People
Foster the People is an American indie pop band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2009. Its members include founder and frontman Mark Foster (musician), Mark Foster and keyboardist Isom Innis. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds are an English Rock music, rock band formed in 2010 as the solo moniker of Oasis (band), Oasis songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist Noel Gallagher.
