NHS Support Federation
The NHS Support Federation is a pressure group that supports the UK National Health Service. It was founded in 1989 and campaigns "to protect and improve the NHS, keeping it true to its founding principles." It is based in Brighton. It helped to establish the Keep Our NHS Public campaign. Professor Harry Keen was the president of the federation and an active member for many years. It monitors the NHS tendering processes. Jeremy Corbyn cited the work of the Federation in his 2016 campaign for re-election as Labour Party leader, as showing that £16 billion in NHS contracts had been awarded "through the market" since April 2013. National Health Service
The National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). Since 1948, they have been funded out of general taxation. There are three systems which are referred to using the "NHS" name (NHS England, NHS Scotland and NHS Wales). Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland was created separately and is often locally referred to as "the NHS". The four systems were established in 1948 as part of major social reforms following the Second World War. The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Harry Keen
Harry Keen CBE (3 September 1925 – 5 April 2013) was an English diabetologist and a professor of human metabolism at Guy's Hospital. He was the first to identify microalbuminuria as a predictor of kidney disease in diabetics, and was an international authority on diabetes. Early life Keen was born in 1925 in London to a Jewish family; his parents were Sydney Keen, a tailor, and Esther (née Zenober), a teacher who had migrated to the United Kingdom from Poland. He attended St Ann's School in Hanwell and Ealing County Grammar School for Boys. He studied medicine at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, graduating on 5 July 1948, the day that the National Health Service (NHS) was established. Career Keen began his medical career as a house officer at London's West Middlesex Hospital in 1948–49. He then enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving for two years in Suez, Egypt. The 2016 Labour Party leadership election was called when a challenge to Jeremy Corbyn as Leader of the Labour Party arose following criticism of his approach to the Remain campaign in the referendum on membership of the European Union and questions about his leadership of the party.
