NHS Confederation
The NHS Confederation, formerly the National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts, is a membership body for organisations that commission and provide National Health Service services founded in 1990. The predecessor organisation was called the National Association of Health Authorities in England and Wales. It has offices in England, Wales (The Welsh NHS Confederation) and Northern Ireland (the Northern Ireland Confederation for Health and Social Care). Leadership Matthew Taylor was appointed as chief executive in 2021. The previous chief executive was Niall Dickson. Stephen Dorrell was the chair until 2019, when Lord Adebowale took over. Funding NHS Confederation income is generated via number of different activities. 48% is generated through membership subscriptions; 24% is generated through conferences and events, including sponsorship and exhibitions; and 26% is generated through the reward of grants and contracts. Matthew Taylor (political Strategist)
Matthew Taylor (born 5 December 1960) is a British former political strategist and current Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation, having previously led the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) in the United Kingdom between 2006 and 2021. In 2005, he was appointed by incumbent Prime Minister Tony Blair as head of the Number 10 Policy Unit. He is a writer, public speaker and broadcaster who has been a panellist on BBC Radio 4's '' Moral Maze'' since 2008. In October 2016, he was appointed Chair of the Review of Modern Employment established by Prime Minister Theresa May; the Taylor Review report ''Good Work'' was published in July 2017. Niall Dickson
Niall Forbes Ross Dickson CBE (born 5 November 1953) was chair of East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust between April 2021 and December 2023. He was chief executive of the NHS Confederation, between February 2017 and October 2020. Between 2010 and 2016 he served as chief executive and registrar of the General Medical Council (GMC), and led the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) until 2016. Previously, Dickson worked as chief executive of the King’s Fund, from 2004 to 2009, after a career in journalism. Stephen Dorrell
Stephen James Dorrell (born 25 March 1952) is a British Liberal Democrat politician. He served as the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Loughborough between 1979 and 1997 and then for Charnwood from 1997 to 2015. Dorrell most recently served for four years as Chairman of the House of Commons Health Select Committee from 2010 to 2014. In the 1990s he was a full member of John Major's Cabinet for almost three years, whilst serving as both Secretary of State for National Heritage and then Secretary of State for Health until the 1997 general election. He did not contest the 2015 general election and retired from the House of Commons. Lord Adebowale
Victor Olufemi Adebowale, Baron Adebowale, (; born 21 July 1962) is the former Chief Executive of the social care enterprise Turning Point and the current Chair of the NHS Confederation, and was one of the first individuals to become a People's Peer. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to the New Deal, the unemployed, and homeless young people. In 2001 he became one of the first group of people to be appointed as people's peers and was created a life peer on 30 June 2001 taking the title Baron Adebowale, of Thornes in the County of West Yorkshire, sitting as a crossbencher. Clinical Commissioning Group
Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were National Health Service (England), National Health Service (NHS) organisations set up by the Health and Social Care Act 2012 to replace Strategic health authority, strategic health authorities and NHS primary care trust, primary care trusts to organise the delivery of NHS services in each of their local areas in England. On 1 July 2022, they were abolished and replaced by integrated care systems as a result of the Health and Care Act 2022. Independent Healthcare Providers Network
The Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN), formerly known as the NHS Partners Network, is a representative body for independent sector healthcare providers in the United Kingdom. The body was formed in 2005 to provide a voice for private health companies, and was initially made up of organisations involved in the government's Independent Sector Treatment Centre programme. It was formerly part of the NHS Confederation, an independent membership body for organisations in the National Health Service, but became an independent entity in 2020. The members of the IHPN are independent healthcare providers including large hospital groups, diagnostics providers, third-sector organisations and providers of primary, community and dental care. National Association Of Primary Care
The National Association of Primary Care is a membership association for Primary care professionals in the National Health Service and is the primary care provider network of the NHS Confederation. Dr Caroline Taylor is the chair of the association. It has offices in London. Until 1998 it was called the National Association of Commissioning GPs and many of its members were involved with GP Fundholding. It is involved in the development of plans associated with the Five Year Forward View for bringing GP practices together across populations of up to 50,000 patients in what it calls the 'primary care home'. This is similar to the multispecialty community provider model, but on a smaller scale. This has been implemented in 15 pilot sites during 2016, covering around 500,000 patients. Association Of Ambulance Chief Executives
The Association of Ambulance Chief Executives is a non-statutory organisation that facilitates the coordination of programmes of work and policies across National Health Service ambulance services trusts in England. It is analogous to the National Police Chiefs' Council for police forces in the United Kingdom. It advocates closer integration between 999 and 111 services as this allows excess capacity to be utilised to respond to less urgent 999 calls.
