''NHL 98'' is an ice hockey video game developed by EA Canada. It was released in 1997 and was the successor to ''NHL 97''. It was the last installment of the NHL (video game series), NHL series to be released on the SNES, Sega Genesis, or Sega Saturn. It is based on the 1997-98 NHL season. Gameplay ''NHL 98'' took the NHL (video game series), NHL series ahead by introducing full national teams, although EA could not get the Nagano, Nagano, Nagano Olympic Tournament license due to lack of International Ice Hockey Federation, IIHF license, which Gremlin Interactive acquired. The Olympic hockey license itself was acquired by Midway Games, Midway Home Entertainment. Jim Hughson returns for play-by-play, this time joined by Daryl Reaugh, who provided color commentary. ''NHL 97'' is an ice hockey video game by EA Sports. It was released in 1996 and was the successor to '' NHL 96''. It is the sixth installment of the NHL series and the first to be released on both PlayStation and Saturn. A Panasonic M2 version was in development and slated to be one of the launch titles for it, but never happened due to the cancellation of the system. The cover of the game features goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck, who played for the Florida Panthers between 1993–98. ''NHL 97'' was the last game of the ''NHL'' series to feature a goaltender on the cover until Martin Brodeur was chosen for the cover of '' NHL 14''. 1996–97 NHL Season
The 1996–97 NHL season was the 80th regular season of the National Hockey League. The Winnipeg Jets relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, becoming the Phoenix Coyotes. The Stanley Cup winners were the Detroit Red Wings, who swept the Philadelphia Flyers in four games and won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 42 years. The regular season saw a decline in scoring and rise in the number of shutouts to an all-time record of 127. This trend continued into the playoffs, during which an all-time record of 18 shutouts were recorded. Only two players, Mario Lemieux and Teemu Selanne, reached the 100-point plateau during the regular season (compared with 12 who reached the plateau in 1995–96). Many regulatory factors, including ruling changes that resulted in fewer power plays, more calls of the skate-in-the-crease rule, fewer shots on goal and more injuries to star players than the season before, contributed to the reduction in scoring and skyrocketing in shutouts. Vladimir Nikolaevich Konstantinov (; born March 19, 1967) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player who played his entire National Hockey League (NHL) career, from 1991 to 1997 with the Detroit Red Wings. Previously, he had played for Soviet club CSKA Moscow. His career was ended in a limousine crash six days after the Red Wings' 1997 Stanley Cup victory. Playing career Defection from the Soviet Union Konstantinov was drafted 221st overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, after impressing a Wings scout at the 1987 World Junior Championships, where a brawl broke out in the Soviet Union–Canada game. Daryl Kevin "Razor" Reaugh ( ; born February 13, 1965) is a retired professional ice hockey goaltender and now a broadcaster for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL), '' NHL on NBC'', and ''Hockey Night in Canada''. He played 27 games in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers and Hartford Whalers between 1985 and 1991. Biography Playing career Reaugh played for the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League where he was an All-Star goaltender. In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft the Edmonton Oilers selected Reaugh with the 42nd pick. He played 7 games with the Oilers but spent the majority of his six years in the organization in the American Hockey League. Jim Hughson (born October 9, 1956) is a retired Canadian sportscaster, best known for his play-by-play of the National Hockey League. He was the lead play-by-play commentator for the ''NHL on Sportsnet'' from 2014 to 2021 and ''Hockey Night in Canada'' from 2008 to 2021. His career spanned 42 years.
