NCC Class S1
The Northern Counties Committee (NCC) Class S1 was a class of two-cylinder Compound locomotive, compound steam locomotives that was introduced for service on the narrow gauge railways of County Antrim in north-east Ireland. The members of the class were rebuilds of the BNCR Class S. History The Class S1 was a class of two locomotives that were rebuilt by the Northern Counties Committee, LMS (NCC) from BNCR Class S Thomas William Worsdell, Worsdell-August von Borries, von Borries two-cylinder compound locomotives. They had outside cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear with the smaller diameter high-pressure cylinder on the left and the larger low-pressure one on the right. Northern Counties Committee
The Northern Counties Committee (NCC) was a railway that served the north-east of Ireland. It was built to Irish gauge () but later acquired a number of narrow gauge lines. It had its origins in the Belfast and Ballymena Railway which opened to traffic on 11 April 1848. The NCC itself was formed on 1 July 1903 as the result of the Midland Railway of England taking over the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway (BNCR), which the Belfast and Ballymena Railway had become. At the Railways Act 1921, 1923 Grouping of British railway companies, the Committee became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). After the Transport Act 1947, nationalisation of Britain's railways in 1948 the NCC was briefly part of the British Transport Commission, which sold it to the Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) in 1949. It contains the opening to the main steam pipe and its purpose is to allow this opening to be kept well above the water level in the boiler. Buffer Beam
A headstock of a rail vehicle is a transverse structural member located at the extreme end of the vehicle's underframe. The headstock supports the coupling at that end of the vehicle, and may also support buffers, in which case it may also be known as a buffer beam.
