NATSAP
The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) is a United States trade organization of therapeutic schools, residential treatment programs, wilderness programs, outdoor therapeutic programs, young adult programs, and home-based residential programs for adolescents and young adults with emotional and behavioral difficulties. NATSAP is not an accrediting or licensing body. In order to be members, schools and programs are required to be in full compliance with NATSAP's published ''Ethical Principles'' and ''Principles of Good Practice''. The organization publishes a professional journal, the ''Journal of Therapeutic Schools and Programs'', conducts conferences and workshops, and publishes a directory of its members. Hidden Lake Academy
Hidden Lake Academy was a therapeutic boarding school in Dahlonega, Georgia, United States, in operation from 1994 until 2011. In 2006, it was the subject of legal action over accreditation. The school filed bankruptcy in 2009 and shut down in 2011. History The school was founded in 1994 by Dr. Leonard Buccelatto in Dahlonega, Georgia. It was intended to "fill the need for a specialty school to fill the gap between services of residential treatment centers and traditional boarding schools." A federal class action lawsuit against the school by a group of parents was filed in 2006. Although denied class action status, the parties settled out of court for $400,000. The lawsuit caused a drop in student enrollments and cost the school $1.5 million in legal fees. Wilderness Therapy
Wilderness therapy, also known as outdoor behavioral healthcare, is a treatment option for behavioral disorders, substance abuse, and mental health issues in adolescents. Patients spend time living outdoors with other peers. Reports of abuse, deaths, and lack of research into efficacy have led to controversy, and there is no solid proof of its effectiveness in treating such behavioral disorders, substance abuse, and mental health issues in adolescents. The term "wilderness therapy" is sometimes used interchangeably with "challenge courses, adventure-based therapy, wilderness experience programs, nature therapy, therapeutic camping, recreation therapy, outdoor therapy, open-air therapy and adventure camps." Élan School
Élan School was an abusive behavior modification program and therapeutic boarding school located in Poland, Maine. It was a full member of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) and was considered to be a part of the troubled teen industry. The facility closed down on April 1, 2011, following multiple reports of abuse, many from former students, dating back to its opening in 1970. The Élan School was located on a campus in south Poland that was formerly a hunting lodge. There were also other campuses, such as the one on 424 Maplecrest Road in Parsonsfield, which was formerly a hotel and hospital before it was bought by Élan in 1975. CEDU Educational Services, Inc., known simply as CEDU (pronounced see-doo), was a company founded in 1967 in Palm Springs, California by Mel Wasserman and associated with the birth of the troubled teen industry. The company owned and operated several therapeutic boarding schools licensed as Group home, group homes, wilderness therapy, wilderness therapy programs, and behavior modification programs in California and Idaho. The company's schools have faced numerous allegations of abuse. CEDU was purchased by Brown Schools Inc. of Texas, in 1998. In 2005, Brown Schools Inc filed for bankruptcy, amid lawsuits and state regulatory crackdowns. Origins CEDU originates from Synanon, a new religious movement within the Human Potential Movement. Carlbrook School was a private, coeducational, college preparatory boarding school located on in Halifax, Virginia. It was non-sectarian and covered grades 9 through 12. As of 2014, it reported an enrollment of 80 students. The school closed permanently in December 2015. At that time, it had graduated almost 700 alumni. Carlbrook's mission statement was to help students discover, internalize and effectively utilize the intellectual and personal resources necessary to succeed in college and in life.
