The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is a pickup truck racing series owned and operated by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), and is the only series in NASCAR to race production pickup truck-based stock cars. The series is one of three national divisions of NASCAR, ranking as the third tier behind the second-tier NASCAR Xfinity Series and the top level NASCAR Cup Series and is also the youngest NASCAR-sanctioned national racing competition to date. The 2023 season was the first with Stanley Black & Decker holding the series' naming rights. Previously, Sears, Roebuck & Co held title sponsorship from 1995 through 2008 with the Craftsman brand, during which the series was known as the NASCAR SuperTruck Series in 1995 and the Craftsman Truck Series from 1996 through 2008. Stock car racing is a form of Auto racing, automobile racing run on oval track racing, oval tracks and road courses. It originally used Production vehicle, production-model cars, hence the name "stock car", but is now run using cars specifically built for racing. Desert racing is the act of racing through the desert in a two- or four-wheeled off-road vehicle. Races, which generally consist of two or more loops around a course covering up to , can take the form of Hare and Hound or Hare scramble style events, and are often laid out over a long and harsh track through relatively barren terrain. Point-to-point–style races, including the famous Mint 400 and Baja 1000, attract nationally ranked and celebrity drivers. Frank "Scoop" Vessels
Frank "Scoop" Vessels III (1952 – August 11, 2010) was an American off-road truck racer, winner of the 1977 Baja 1000 desert off-road race. He was sponsored by BFGoodrich Tires. Vessels was a participant in the formation of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 1994. Frank earned the nickname "Scoop" from hanging around his grandfather's horse stalls as a kid. Off-road racing Vessels attained more than thirty off-road victories throughout his career, with at least one in every major off-road event. He was a four-time SCORE class champion. In 1974 Frank was named the "SCORE Rookie of the Year," and the "Off-Roadsman of the Year" by SCORE International in 1978. One of his most important wins was at the 1977 Baja 1000. Jim Smith is an American motocross racer and former NASCAR team owner who helped found the Craftsman Truck Series. Smith tested a prototype of the truck prior to the 1994 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Smith owned Ultra Motorsports until the closing of their shop in early 2006 following a sponsorship dispute with the Ford Motor Company. Ultra Motorsports fielded Dodges in the Craftsman Truck Series for Ted Musgrave and Jimmy Spencer, and was an investment partner with Robby Gordon Motorsports in the NEXTEL Cup Series. SCORE International (Southern California Off Road Enthusiasts) is an off-road racing sanctioning body in the sport of desert racing. Founded by Mickey Thompson in 1973, SCORE International was purchased from Sal Fish in late 2012. and is run by its current president and race director Jose A. Grijalva and General Manager Juan Tintos. The sanctioning body's premier series is the SCORE World Desert Championship, which consists of four races in Baja California peninsula: the San Felipe 250, Baja 500, Baja 400, and Baja 1000. Race format Vehicles are released from the start line individually, in gaps of 60 seconds between Trophy Trucks and Class 1 racers then 30 seconds for all other classes.
