N8 Road (Netherlands)
The A8 motorway is a motorway in the Netherlands. It starts at the intersection with the Ring Amsterdam (the A10 motorway) at interchange Coenplein, and leads past Oostzaan, interchange Zaandam, and Zaandijk towards its terminus, just 10 kilometers from its beginning at the Coenplein, near Assendelft. Overview In the 1970s, this road was planned to be extended for about 5 extra kilometers towards the A9 motorway, between the interchange Beverwijk and the exit Heemskerk. However, due to the rising oil prices and the congestion which was already a problem at the A10 near the Coenplein, it was decided not to do so after all. N8 Currently, along parts of the N246 and N203 roads, signs are placed with the number ''N8'', to direct the motorist from the terminus of the A8 motorway towards the exit Uitgeest of the A9 motorway. The A10 motorway () is a motorway in the Netherlands. This motorway is the ring road around the city of Amsterdam. It has a length of . Five other motorways connect to the A10: motorway A8 at interchange Coenplein (north), motorway A5 at interchange Coenplein (south), A4 at interchange De Nieuwe Meer, A2 at interchange Amstel, and A1 at interchange Watergraafsmeer. Part of the A10 is the Coentunnel, crossing the Noordzeekanaal ("North Sea Canal"). This twin tube tunnel was notorious for traffic jams for decades and another two tubes have been built. These new tubes opened on 13 May 2013 and the old tubes were closed for extensive renovation. On 21 July 2014 the old tubes were reopened after completing the renovations and all four tubes became be available for traffic. Zaandijk () is a town in the municipality of Zaanstad, province of North Holland, Netherlands. Assendelft
Assendelft () is a town in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad. Assendelft was a separate municipality until 1974, when the municipality of Zaanstad was formed. However, Assendelft didn't want to be part of Zaanstad and pled together with Krommenie to be part of a new municipality called Krommenie-Assendelft. Zaanstad is part of the Amsterdam Agglomeration ( GA). The North Sea Canal connects Assendelft with Amsterdam and Velsen, and it lies about 13 km northeast of Haarlem and about 15 km south of Alkmaar. History Assendelft is one of the oldest settlements in North Holland, with signs of settlement dating from as early as 500BC. The earliest written form of the name appears as 'Ascmannedilf' in 1063. A9 Motorway (Netherlands)
The A9 motorway is a motorway in the Netherlands. The motorway starts off by going from the A1 at Diemen ( junction Diemen) to the A2 at junction 'Holendrecht' (on the 'Gaasperdammerweg'). Overview Here one drives approximately two kilometers south by means of the combined A9/A2 before the A9 heads off to the west again towards Amstelveen, junction 'Badhoevedorp' ( A4), junction 'Raasdorp' ( A5), junction 'Rottepolderplein' ( A200) and on to junction 'Velsen' ( A22). Hereafter, the A9 goes further northward by means of the Wijkertunnel under the North Sea Canal, junction 'Beverwijk' ( A22) to Alkmaar. At this point, the A9 motorway becomes the N9 highway and proceeds until De Kooy (at Den Helder). In 1996, the Wijkertunnel was opened and integrated into the A9. Heemskerk
Heemskerk ( ) is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is located in the Kennemerland region. History The town was formed during the Middle Ages. In an official deed from the year of 1063, the town was known as ''Hemezen Kyrica'', Latinized Frisian meaning Church of Hemezen, a Frisians, Frisian nun who lived in a religious house there. Heemskerk knows many historical monuments, among them the ''Huldtoneel'' (lit. the "Inaugurate Stage"), an artificial hill located near the current Rijksstraatweg, where once the Count of Holland, Counts of Holland were inaugurated.
