N2K Consortium
The N2K Consortium is a collaborative multinational effort by American, Chilean and Japanese astronomers to find additional extrasolar planets around stars that are not already being surveyed. The N2K is shorthand for the set of roughly 2,000 of the nearest and most luminous main sequence stars that were selected to be newly surveyed. Target stars have a B - V color index value between 0.4 and 1.2, a visual magnitude brighter than 10.5, and a distance of less than 110 pc from the Sun. They were selected based upon their high metallicity, which is the abundance of elements other than hydrogen and helium. The observing campaign uses the Keck, Magellan and Subaru telescopes, plus automated telescopes at Fairborn Observatory. Each star is observed three times over a period of several days, then checked for short period variations in radial velocity. HD 33283
HD 33283 is a star in the southern constellation Lepus with one planet and a co-moving stellar companion. With an apparent visual magnitude of 8.05, the star is too faint to be seen with the naked eye. It is located at a distance of 294 light years from the Sun based on parallax, and is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +4.5. This is an ordinary G-type main-sequence star with a stellar classification of G3/5V. It is about 3.6 billion years old and is chromospherically inactive. Axólotl
HD 224693, also named Axólotl, is a star in the equatorial constellation of Cetus, and is positioned near the western constellation border with Aquarius. It can be viewed with a small telescope but is too faint to be seen with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 8.23. Based on parallax measurements, the object is located at a distance of approximately 308 light-years from the Sun. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of 1.4 km/s. The star HD 224693 is named Axólotl. The name was selected in the NameExoWorlds campaign by Mexico, during the 100th anniversary of the IAU. "Axólotl" means "water animal" in the native Nahuatl language and an axolotl is also a species of salamander endemic to the valley of Mexico. Rosalíadecastro
HD 149143, also called Rosalíadecastro, is a star with a close orbiting exoplanet in the Ophiuchus constellation. Its apparent visual magnitude is 7.89 (a binocular object) and the absolute magnitude is 3.87. The system is located at a distance of 239 light years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, and it is drifting further away with a radial velocity of 12 km/s. On December 17, 2019, as part of the IAU's NameExoWorlds project, the star HD 149143 was given the name Rosalíadecastro in honour of the Galician poet Rosalía de Castro, who was a significant figure of Galician culture and prominent writer in Galician overall, but in Spanish too, whose work often referenced the night and celestial objects. Ogma (star)
HD 149026, also named Ogma , is a yellow subgiant star approximately 249 light-years from the Sun in the constellation of Hercules. An exoplanet (designated HD 149026 b, later named Smertrios) orbits the star. Nomenclature HD 149026 is the star's identifier in the Henry Draper Catalog. Following its discovery in 2005 the planet was designated HD 149026 b. In July 2014 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) launched NameExoWorlds, a process for giving proper names to certain exoplanets and their host stars. The process involved public nomination and voting for the new names. In December 2015, the IAU announced the winning names were Ogma for this star and Smertrios for its planet. The winning names based on those submitted by the Club d'Astronomie de Toussaint of France; namely 'Ogmios' and 'Smertrios'. Ogmios was a Gallo-Roman deity and Smertrios was a Gallic deity of war. Bibha
HD 86081 is a yellow-hued star in the equatorial constellation of Sextans. It has the proper name Bibhā, the Bengali form of a Sanskrit word meaning a bright beam of light. The star is named after the physicist Bibha Chowdhuri (1913-1991), who studied cosmic rays. This name was suggested in the 2019 NameExoWorlds campaign. With an apparent visual magnitude of 8.73, this star is too dim to be viewed with the naked eye but can be seen with a small telescope. Fairborn Observatory
Mount Hopkins is a peak of the Santa Rita Mountains range, in Santa Cruz County, southern Arizona. The peak was named after Gilbert Hopkins, who was killed nearby during the Battle of Fort Buchanan in 1865. It is in the Coronado National Forest and is bounded on three sides by the Mount Wrightson Wilderness. Fairborn Observatory In 1979, Russell Merle Genet founded the Fairborn Observatory, which he moved from Fairborn, Ohio to Mount Hopkins, Arizona in 1985, and worked there until 1993. He was also its first director, until 1989. Genet and his colleagues developed robotic telescopes there. It became the first totally automatic robotic observatory in the world.
