N22 Road (Ireland)
The N22 road is a national primary road in Ireland which goes through counties Kerry and Cork, from Tralee in the west through Killarney, Macroom and Ballincollig to Cork City in the east. Improvements Sections of the N22 were upgraded in the late 20th and early 21st century. During the 1980s and 1990s, a section between Killarney and the border with County Cork was rebuilt and widened. An auxiliary climbing lane has been provided on the steep grade sections. The late 1980s saw a bypass of Killarney. In 2004, the Ballincollig bypass west of Cork city was completed. This is an dual carriageway road built to Motorway standards that connects with the N40 Cork South Ring Road. In 2005, of the road between Tralee and Farranfore was upgraded. N40 Road
The N40 road (commonly known as the Cork South Ring Road, or locally 'The South Link') is a national primary road in Cork City, Ireland. The road runs through Cork City forming an orbital and distributor route through the south side of the city, linking the N22 at Ballincollig to the N25 at the Dunkettle Interchange. The present N40 was created on 23 February 2012 via statutory instrument. The newly designated N40 was formed from parts of both the N22 and N25. It is intended that once the Cork North Ring Road is completed, that the N40 will comprise a complete orbital route through the inner city. Route The Cork South Ring Road commences at the junction with the N22 at the end of the Ballincollig bypass. 2+1 Road
2+1 road is a specific category of three-lane road, consisting of two lanes in one direction and one lane in the other, alternating every few kilometres, and usually separated with a steel cable barrier. The second lane allows faster-moving traffic to overtake slower vehicles at regular intervals. Traditional roads of at least width can be converted to 2+1 roads and reach near-motorway safety levels at a much lower cost than an actual conversion to motorway or dual carriageway. Sometimes, during freeway reconstruction, a barrier transfer machine will be used on one half of the freeway while the other is being reconstructed. A similar concept is utilized with 3-lane setups where 2 lanes have right of way, and the opposing side has to yield to the oncoming side on major highways that are mostly 2 lanes, of which those are more common.
