N. H. McCoy
Neal Henry McCoy (March 6, 1905 – January 5, 2001) was an American mathematician, university professor, and author of several textbooks for mathematics undergraduates. His 1960 textbook ''Introduction to Modern Algebra'' has gone through several editions and has been translated into many foreign languages. Early life and education McCoy was born into a homesteading family in Waukomis, Oklahoma (which was part of the Oklahoma Territory from 1890 to 1907). He had an older sister Dorothy McCoy (1903–2001), who became the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Iowa. As an infant, he moved in 1906 with his mother and sister to Chesapeake, Missouri after the death of his father. After graduating with a bachelor's degree from Baylor University, he became a graduate student at the University of Iowa. Cyrus Colton MacDuffee
Cyrus Colton MacDuffee (June 29, 1895 – August 21, 1961) from Oneida, New York was a professor of mathematics at University of Wisconsin. He wrote a number of influential research papers in abstract algebra. MacDuffee served on the Council of the American Mathematical Society (A.M.S.), was editor of the ''Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Transactions of the A.M.S.'', and served as president of the Mathematical Association of America (M.A.A). MacDuffee obtained his B.S. degree in 1917 from Colgate University and a Ph.D. in 1922 from the University of Chicago ; his thesis was on Nonassociative algebras under the direction of Leonard E. Dickson. In 1935, MacDuffee joined the University of Wisconsin, where he remained until his death in 1961. He served as chair of the department (1951–56). André Weil (; ; 6 May 1906 – 6 August 1998) was a French mathematician, known for his foundational work in number theory and algebraic geometry. He was a founding member and the ''de facto'' early leader of the mathematical Bourbaki group. The philosopher Simone Weil was his sister. The writer Sylvie Weil is his daughter.
