Maggie L. Walker
Maggie Lena (née Draper Mitchell) Walker (July 15, 1864 – December 15, 1934) was a businesswoman and teacher. In 1903, Walker became both the first African American woman to charter a bank and the first African American woman to serve as a bank president. As a leader, Walker achieved successes with the vision to make tangible improvements in the way of life for African Americans. Disabled by paralysis and a wheelchair user later in life, Walker also became an example for people with disabilities. Walker's restored and furnished home in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia has been designated a National Historic Site, operated by the National Park Service. Charles Thaddeus Russell
Charles Thaddeus Russell (June 19, 1875 – August 24, 1952) was an American architect who was one of the first two licensed African American architects in Virginia. He was the first to be licensed in Richmond, Virginia and he designed buildings on what became known as the "Black Wall Street of America". Early life and education He was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1875. He grew up in a black section of Richmond called Jackson Ward. He began his studies at the Hampton Institute in 1893. He graduated from the Institute in 1899 and also received a certificate in carpentry. In 1901, he became a carpentry instructor at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Russell worked on the campus buildings and supervised all of the carpentry. He also collaborated and worked closely with the architects on the project. Antonio Tobias Mendez
Antonio Tobias Mendez (born 1963) is an American sculptor. Works Mendez has produced over twenty public monuments: his sculptures include Thurgood Marshall, Don Shula, Mohandas Gandhi, Major Taylor, and part of the United States Navy Memorial. In 2011, Mendez was nominated as one of the three finalists to complete the Bill Russell statue in the city of Boston at the City Hall Plaza. He also created bronze sculptures of the six Baltimore Orioles greats whose uniform numbers were retired by the ballclub, which are located in the picnic area behind the bullpens beyond left-center field at Camden Yards.
