Mărculești
Mărculești () is a city in Florești District, in northern Moldova, with a population of 2,081 at the 2004 census. The city was once the site of a Jewish agricultural and mercantile colony until its destruction in the Holocaust. In film and television Filmmaker Matthew Mishory's 2015 documentary ''Absent'' was filmed in Mărculești, the site of a horrible atrocity in 1941 in which all of the village's Jews were massacred by the Romanian army. The film introduces the current residents of Mărculești, some of who seem to be unaware (or unwilling to discuss) what happened. Mishory's own grandparents lived in the village, escaping to Israel just before the start of the Holocaust. Florești District
Florești () is a district () in the north-east of Moldova, with the administrative center at Florești. The other major cities are Ghindeşti and Mărculeşti. As of 1 January 2011, its population was 90,000. History Localities with the oldest documentary attestation of the district are: Cuhureștii de Sus, Cuhureștii de Jos, Cunicea documented on 20 December 1437. The fifteenth to seventeenth centuries in the region were marked by continued development of trade and the local economy, and a significant increase in the population. Floresti itself is first documented on 20 August 1588. The eighteenth century was marked by economic decline of the region because of the constant wars waged by the regional powers: Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire. Moldova ( , ; ), officially the Republic of Moldova ( ro, Republica Moldova), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. 2004 Moldovan Census
The 2004 Moldovan census was carried out between October 5 and October 12, 2004. The breakaway Transnistria failed to come into an agreement with the central government in Chişinău, and carried out its own census between November 11 and November 18, 2004. The results of the census in Transnistria were put into question. Moldova's previous census was performed in 1989, when the territory of the country was part of the former Soviet Union. The census was delayed several times and had difficulties because of political problems, ethnic tensions, and a lack of financial resources. The Holocaust
The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe; around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population. Matthew Mishory
Matthew Mishory is an American film director of Israeli descent. He has directed both narrative and documentary films and was named a "rising talent" by '' Variety Magazine'' in 2013. His award-winning 2009 film, ''Delphinium'', about Derek Jarman, was preserved by the British Film Institute in its National Film Archive. Life and career Mishory was born on July 17, 1982 in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. He is a citizen of the United States and Israel. He studied film at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
