Mārtiņš Skirmants
Mārtiņš Skirmants born December 7, 1977 in Rīga, Latvia is a former Latvian professional basketball player who played the Center position. Playing career Mārtiņš Skirmants started playing basketball in Daugavpils, but later on he moved to Rīga, where he started his pro career. Skirmants spent most of his career playing for LBL clubs. He won seven LBL championships: one with Brocēni (1998), five with BK Ventspils (2002-2006) and one with Barons (2010). Skirmants excelled at shot blocking, which was his strength on defense. He was part of Latvian National Team at EuroBasket 2005. BK Ventspils
BK Ventspils is a professional basketball club that is located in Ventspils, Latvia. The club competes in the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. History BK Ventspils was founded in 1994. In first years Ventspils proved themselves as relevant part of Latvian basketball, but major step came in 1997 when Ventspils Olympic Center was built. At that time Ventspils started to play in international competitions playing in 1997–98 edition of FIBA Korać Cup, which was followed by playing in FIBA Saporta Cup. The blue and yellow bicolour first appeared during the 1848 Revolutions of 1848, Spring of Nations in Lviv, Lemberg, then part of the Austrian Empire. BK Barons/LDz (previously Barons/LMT) was a professional basketball club which is based in Riga, Latvia. The team played in the first division of Latvian Basketball League. History Barons kvartāls was an integral part of Latvia's recent basketball history, as it (under the name Princips) was one of the foundation teams of the Latvian Basketball League (LBL) in 1992. In the first season Princips carried off bronze in the LBL. After two seasons Princips was renamed the LainERS, making their way into Latvia's basketball history with its first American legionary Mikki Jackson, with a cheerleader show and first ever game programmes in the Latvian league. LainERS achieved LBL bronze in 1994, and in the next two seasons finished in 4th place. They also reached the semi-finals in 1998, but then for couple of years no greater success was achieved. The national flag of Latvia ( lv, Latvijas karogs) was used by independent Latvia from 1918 until the country was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940. Its use was suppressed during Soviet rule. On 27 February 1990, shortly before the country regained its independence, the Latvian government re-adopted the traditional red-white-red flag.
