Mürzzuschlag
Mürzzuschlag () is a town in northeastern Styria, Austria, the capital of the former Mürzzuschlag District. It is located on the Mürz river near the Semmering Pass, the border with the state of Lower Austria, about southwest of Vienna. The population is 8,684 (1 January 2016). Originally an industrial area, the nearby mountains are today a popular ski resort. History The settlement in the Duchy of Styria was first documented in 1227. Neuberg An Der Mürz
Neuberg an der Mürz is a municipality in the district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in the Austrian state of Styria. Geography Neuberg lies in the upper valley of the Mürz at the foot of the Schneealpe northwest of Mürzzuschlag. History Otto, Duke of Austria founded Neuberg Abbey in 1327. The Treaty of Neuberg was signed there in 1379. The abbey was the center of settlement in the Mürz Valley. The abbey was suppressed in 1786 by Emperor Joseph II, and its church became the parish church of Neuberg. Following the suppression of the abbey, iron mining began, eventually becoming the dominant industry in the area. After the hunting privileges of the Habsburg family to the Vienna Woods were rolled back in 1848, the abbey became an imperial hunting lodge, hosting notable guests. Mürzsteg Alps
The Mürzsteg Alps or Mürztal Alps () are a mountain range in the Eastern Alps (Northern Limestone Alps), which lie in the Austrian state of Styria, with a small part of the range in Lower Austria. The highest peak is the Hohe Veitsch () in the centre of the group, while largest massif is the Schneealpe () in the northwest, near the Rax. The following ranges border on the Mürzsteg Alps: to the north the Türnitz Alps, to the northeast the Gutenstein Alps, to the east the Rax-Schneeberg Group, to the southeast the Prealps east of the Mur (specifically the Fischbach Alps) and to the west the Hochschwab Mountains. Bruck an der Mur () is a city of some 15,970 people located in the district Bruck-Mürzzuschlag, in the Austrian state of Styria. It is located at the confluence of the rivers Mur and Mürz. Its manufacturing includes metal products and paper. Bruck is located on the Graz to Vienna main line, and is an important regional rail junction. History The earliest surviving record of Bruck dates from the time of King Ludovicus II "Germanicus", when it was identified, in a record dated 20 November 860, as "ad pruccam", a manor of the archbishopric of Salzburg. The settlement then identified with this name was in the location currently occupied by the suburb now called "St. Ruprecht". The settlement then located at what is now the centre of Bruck is identified in the ninth century record as "muorica kimundi" (i.e. the mouth of the Mürz). Fischbach Alps
The Fischbach Alps () are part of the Prealps East of the Mur. Location and countryside The Fischbach Alps are a gentle, elongated mountain range in the Alps, with the character of a low mountain range and covered in forests and Alpine meadows. They are located in the Styria in Austria, south of the Mürz. They are the eastern outliers of the Central Alps and part of the Styrian Prealps. The Austrian Southern Railway () is a long double track railway, which linked the capital Vienna with Trieste, the former main seaport of Austria-Hungary, by railway for the first time.
