Mädler Arcade Gallery
The Mädler Arcade Gallery () is the last completely preserved historic shopping arcade covered by an end-to-end glass roof in the city center of Leipzig. It is a facility of upmarket retail, restaurants, offices and cultural establishments. Description The arcade gallery consists of three arms, arranged in a T-shape. At the point where the three arms meet there is an octagonal rotunda with a diameter of around . The longer arm from Grimmaische Strasse to the rotunda was built first and is around long. Similar to the building's model, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, the passage is delimited by street facades drawn inwards. Bruno Mädler
Bruno Mädler (April 15, 1855 in Leipzig - 1917 in Berlin) was a German Businessperson, businessman. He became known for founding the Bruno Mädler mechanical engineering company in 1882, which is still active worldwide under the company name Mädler in the fourth generation. Life Bruno Mädler came from an entrepreneurial family. He was born to Carl Moritz and Eleonora (née Grumpelt) in Leipzig. In 1850 his father founded the suitcase and bag factory Moritz Mädler, which was continued after his death by Bruno's elder brothers Paul Moritz and Anton Mädler. Bruno Mädler grew up in Leipzig. In 1912, his brother Anton initiated the construction of the Mädlerpassage in Leipzig based on the model of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. He was married to Clara Mädler (née Riehm), who gave birth to their son Walter on August 22, 1881 in Berlin. The arcade galleries in Leipzig developed in connection with the emergence of inner-city exhibition centers of the Leipziger Messe at the turn of the 20th century and are often based on old passageways. But the tradition of building passages has also been maintained in more recent times. The Leipzig passages and courtyards thus form a unique architectural quality in Leipzig-Mitte and run through the old city center parallel to the network of existing streets and alleys like a second, private path system that is only reserved for pedestrians. Arcade (architecture)
An arcade is a succession of contiguous arches, with each arch supported by a colonnade of columns or piers. Exterior arcades are designed to provide a sheltered walkway for pedestrians. The walkway may be lined with retail stores. An arcade may feature arches on both sides of the walkway. Alternatively, a blind arcade superimposes arcading against a solid wall. Blind arcades are a feature of Romanesque architecture that influenced Gothic architecture. In the Gothic architectural tradition, the arcade can be located in the interior, in the lowest part of the wall of the nave, supporting the triforium and the clerestory in a cathedral, or on the exterior, in which they are usually part of the walkways that surround the courtyard and cloisters. The Last Generation (German: , , Italian: ) is a group of climate change activists mostly active in Germany, Italy, and Austria.
