Myriostoma Coliforme
''Myriostoma coliforme'', commonly known as the saltshaker earthstar or pepper pot, is a fungal species in the family (biology), family Geastraceae. Basidiocarps resemble Geastrales, earthstars, but the spore sac is supported by multiple columns (instead of a single column) and has multiple ostioles instead of a single, apical ostiole. It has also been called "salt-shaker earthstar". The fungus has a north temperate distribution, but was formerly thought to be more widespread due to confusion with related ''Myriostoma'' species. ''Myriostoma coliforme'' is an uncommon species and appears on the Regional Red List, Red Lists of 12 European countries. In 2004 it was one of 33 species proposed for protected species, protection under the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, Bern Convention by the European Council for Conservation of Fungi. James Dickson (botanist)
James (Jacobus) J. Dickson (1738–1822) was a Scottish nurseryman, plant collector, botanist and mycologist. Between 1785 and 1801 he published his ''Fasciculus plantarum cryptogamicarum Britanniae'', a four-volume work in which he published over 400 species of algae and fungi that occur in the British Isles He is also the editor of the exsiccata work ''Hortus siccus Britannicus, being a collection of dried British plants, named on the authority of the Linnean herbarium and other original collections'' (1793–1802). Mycelium (: mycelia) is a root-like structure of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. Its normal form is that of branched, slender, entangled, anastomosing, hyaline threads. Fungal colonies composed of mycelium are found in and on soil and many other substrates. A typical single spore germinates into a monokaryotic mycelium, which cannot reproduce sexually; when two compatible monokaryotic mycelia join and form a dikaryotic mycelium, that mycelium may form fruiting bodies such as mushrooms.
