Myctophum Punctatum
''Myctophum punctatum'' is a species of mesopelagic fish in the family Myctophidae. Its common name is spotted lanternfish, sometimes spelled spotted lanterfish. It is found in the Northern Atlantic and in the Mediterranean at depths down to 1000m. It is one of the dominant species in midwater assemblages near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. ''Myctophum punctatum'' can grow to SL. It performs diurnal migrations to the surface at dusk. It feeds mostly on copepods and euphausiids. Larvae of ''Myctophum punctatum'' have stalked eyes In anatomy, an eyestalk (sometimes spelled eye stalk and also known as an ommatophore) is a protrusion that extends an eye away from the body, giving the eye a better field of view. It is a common feature in nature and frequently appears in fict .... Myctophum Affine
''Myctophum affine'', the metallic lanternfish, is a species of lanternfish native to the Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest of the world's five oceans, with an area of about . It covers approximately 20% of Earth's surface and about 29% of its water surface area. It is known to separate the " Old World" of Africa, Europe .... ''Myctophum affine'' grows to a length of SL. Description Phenotypic observations of ''Myctophum affine'' presume that males carry dorsal luminous scales, while females of the species have luminous ventral scales. It is stated that males typically possess seven or eight luminous dorsal scales, while females usually have three to four luminous ventral scales. The luminous scales of male ''Myctophum affine'' begin to develop at smaller sizes than those of the female ( Gibbs, 1957). References * * Gibbs, R. H. (1957). Lanternfish
Lanternfishes (or myctophids, from the Greek μυκτήρ ''myktḗr'', "nose" and ''ophis'', "serpent") are small mesopelagic fish of the large family Myctophidae. One of two families in the order Myctophiformes, the Myctophidae are represented by 246 species in 33 genera, and are found in oceans worldwide. Lanternfishes are aptly named after their conspicuous use of bioluminescence. Their sister family, the Neoscopelidae, are much fewer in number but superficially very similar; at least one neoscopelid shares the common name "lanternfish": the large-scaled lantern fish, ''Neoscopelus macrolepidotus''. Lanternfish are among the most widely distributed, diverse and populous vertebrates, with some estimates suggesting that they may have a total global biomass of 1.8 to 16 gigatonnes, accounting for up to 65% of all deep-sea fish biomass. Commercial fisheries for them exist off South Africa, in the sub-Antarctic, and in the Gulf of Oman. Description Lanternfish typically hav ...
