My Pilot, Whale
''My Pilot, Whale'' is a short documentary film directed by Alexander and Nicole Gratovsky, demonstrating direct communication between a human and free pilot whales in the open ocean. The entire underwater part was shot without diving equipment; both the operator and the person appearing in the frame are freediving. The film’s premiere took place in Marseille as part of the World Festival of Underwater Images in November 2014Official selection of the World Festival of Underwater Images in Marseille and then, during the year, the film won several prizes, and was repeatedly nominated and selected in the official programs of European and American film festivals. In Russia the film was first shown on 30 March 2015 in the Angleterre cinema club in St. Petersburg. Alexander And Nicole Gratovsky
Alexander and Nicole Gratovsky are Russian and European (Belgium, Spain) anthropologists of Russian descent, spouses, co-authors of books, films, expositions, public presentations, and cultural events in the field of mind and consciousness research. First joint projects Alexander and Nicole (maiden name Kors) met in 1990 in Brussels and were baptised into the Orthodox faith and married at the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow in the same year. At baptism, Nicole received the name Tatiana. The couple were married by father Mikhail Ryazantsev. Pilot Whale
Pilot whales are cetaceans belonging to the genus ''Globicephala''. The two Extant taxon, extant species are the long-finned pilot whale (''G. melas'') and the short-finned pilot whale (''G. macrorhynchus''). The two are not readily distinguishable at sea, and analysis of the skulls is the best way to distinguish between the species. Between the two species, they range nearly worldwide, with long-finned pilot whales living in colder waters and short-finned pilot whales living in tropical and subtropical waters. Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the orca. They and other large members of the dolphin family are also known as blackfish. Mirror Test
The mirror test—sometimes called the mark test, mirror self-recognition (MSR) test, red spot technique, or rouge test—is a behavioral technique developed in 1970 by American psychologist Gordon Gallup Jr. to determine whether an animal possesses the ability of visual self-recognition. In this test, an animal is anesthetized and then marked (e.g. paint or sticker) on an area of the body the animal normally cannot see (e.g. forehead). When the animal recovers from the anesthetic, it is given access to a mirror. If the animal then touches or investigates the mark on itself, it is taken as an indication that the animal perceives the reflected image as an image of itself, rather than of another animal.
