Mwadui
The Williamson Diamond Mine (also known as the Mwadui mine) is a diamond mine northeast of Shinyanga in Tanzania; it became well known as the first significant diamond mine outside of South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was found in March 1940 and the mine established by John Williamson, a Canadian geologist, and has been continuous operation since then, making it one of the oldest continuously operating diamond mines in the world. Over its lifetime it has produced over 19 million carats (3,800 kg) of diamonds. A 2020 report by ''The Guardian'' said that high-quality pink diamonds from the mine could value up to $700,000 a carat. The Williamson mine was once owned by its namesake Williamson and later nationalized by the government of Tanzania. Since February 2009 the mine is mostly owned by Petra Diamonds, with 75% ownership, the government of Tanzania owning the remaining 25%. Shinyanga Region
Shinyanga Region (''Mkoa wa Shinyanga'' in Swahili language, Swahili) is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative Regions of Tanzania, regions. The region covers a land area of . The region is comparable in size to the combined land area of the nation state of Fiji. The region is bordered to the north by the Mwanza Region, Mwanza, Mara Region, Mara, and Kagera Region, Kagera Regions and to the south by the Tabora Region. John Williamson (geologist)
John Thoburn Williamson (1907 –1958) was a Canadian geologist famous for establishing the Williamson diamond mine in present-day Tanzania. Early life Williamson was born in 1907 in Montfort, Quebec. He attended McGill University, where he initially intended to study law, but became interested in geology after accompanying a friend on a summer field expedition to Labrador. Prospecting is the first stage of the geological analysis (followed by Mining engineering#Pre-mining, exploration) of a territory. The Williamson pink diamond is a flawless pink diamond set in a brooch that is part of the Royal Collection. History The rough diamond was discovered at the Williamson diamond mine in Tanganyika in October 1947. A month later, the owner of the mine, Canadian geologist John Williamson, gave the uncut stone to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding present. In 1948, the princess and her grandmother, Queen Mary, visited the London diamond cutters Briefel and Lemer to watch the diamond being cut into a round brilliant. In 1952, the pink diamond became the main feature of a platinum brooch designed by Frederick Mew of Cartier, at the centre of a jonquil-shaped flower with five petals and two leaves of noisette-cut diamonds and a stalk of baguette cut diamonds.
