Museum Mayer van den Bergh is a museum in Antwerp, Belgium, the collection of which is based on the vast collection of the art dealer and collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858–1901). The majority of the art works and objects are from the Gothic and Renaissance periods in Belgium, including paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder. History Fritz Mayer van den Bergh was born in 1858 in Antwerp as the son of Henriëtte Henriëtte, who was from an influential Antwerp family, and Emil Mayer, a businessman from Cologne. The family lived in a spacious city palace in the heart of Antwerp, remodelled from an older building. His father already owned an art collection which included works by Jan Brueghel the Elder. Fritz collected art for most of his life, making his most expensive and important additions between 1897 and his death at the age of 43 in 1901. Pieter Huys
Pieter Huys (c.1519 – c.1584) was a Flemish Renaissance painter. He is known of his early life, and though he was mostly active in Antwerp, his place of birth and death is not certain. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1545, and his last dated work is from 1577. Willem Claeszoon Heda
Willem Claeszoon Heda (December 14, 1593/1594c. 1680/1682) was a Dutch Golden Age artist from the city of Haarlem devoted exclusively to the painting of still life. He is known for his innovation of the late breakfast genre of still life painting. Early life Heda was born in Haarlem, the son of the Haarlem city architect Claes Pietersz. His mother Anna Claesdr was a member of the Heda family. His uncle was the painter Cornelis Claesz Heda. Heda's early life is all but unknown, with no surviving pieces dated to that period. Judging from his date of birth, scholars have speculated that Heda began painting around 1615. His earliest known work was a ''Vanitas'' which fit the monochromatic and skillful texturing of his later pieces, but portrayed a subject matter distinct from the depictions of more sumptuous objects in his later years. Cornelis De Vos
Cornelis de Vos (1584 - 9 May 1651) was a Flemish painter, Drawing, draughtsman and art dealer. He was one of the leading portrait painters in Antwerp and is best known for his sensitive portraits, in particular of children and families. The Pietà (; meaning "pity", "compassion") is a subject in Christian art depicting the Mary (mother of Jesus), Blessed Virgin Mary cradling the mortal body of Jesus Christ after his Descent from the Cross. It is most often found in sculpture. The Pietà is a specific form of the Lamentation of Christ in which Jesus is mourned by the Virgin Mary alone. Saint-Amand Abbey (''Abbaye de Saint-Amand''), once known as Elno, Elnon or Elnone Abbey, is a former Benedictine abbey in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, Nord, France. Ambrosius Benson
Ambrosius Benson (, in Ferrara or Milan1550, in Flanders) was an Italian painter who became a part of the Northern Renaissance. While many surviving paintings have been attributed, there is very little known of him from records, and he tended not to sign his work. He is believed to have produced mainly religious art, but also painted portraits on commission. He sometimes painted from classical sources, often setting the figures in a modern dress or a contemporary domestic setting. In his lifetime, he was successful; he had a large workshop, his work was sold internationally, and he was especially popular in Spain. Benson became popular as a source for pastiche with 19th-century painters, who are sometimes known as the "followers of Benson".
