Museu Colecção Berardo
The Berardo Collection Museum (in Portuguese: Museu Colecção Berardo) was a museum of modern art, modern and contemporary art in Santa Maria de Belém, Belém, a district of Lisbon, Portugal. It was replaced by the Contemporary Art Museum - Centro Cultural de Belém in January 2023. History In 2006, after 10 years of negotiations, José Berardo signed an agreement with the Portuguese government to loan art from his collection on a long-term basis to the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. Under the partnership agreement the Portuguese state incurs the costs of displaying Berardo's collection. The art holdings themselves are owned and managed by a company known as the Berardo Collection Association. The museum was formally initiated as the ''Foundation of Modern and Contemporary Art'' on August 9, 2006 (Decree-Law 164/2006). Praça Do Império
The Praça do Império (''Empire Square'') is a city square and park situated adjacent to principal monuments and tourist attractions in the civil parish of Belém, municipality and Portuguese capital of Lisbon. History Between 23 June and 2 December 1940, Lisbon realized the ''Exposição do Mundo Português'' (''Portuguese World Exposition''), that included an urbanization plan that encompassed the area of Belém, that included the ''Praça do Império''. The sculptures of the seahorses, that dominate the site, were completed by sculptor António Duarte were installed in 1940. El Lissitzky
El Lissitzky (, born Lazar Markovich Lissitzky , ; – 30 December 1941), was a Soviet Jewish artist, active as a painter, illustrator, designer, printmaker, photographer, and architect. He was an important figure of the Russian avant-garde, helping develop suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designing numerous art exhibition, exhibition displays and propaganda works for the Soviet Union. Lissitzky began his career illustrating Yiddish children's literature, children's books in an effort to promote Jewish culture in Russia. Cynthia Morris Sherman (born January 19, 1954) is an American artist whose work consists primarily of photographic self-portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts and as various imagined characters. Franz Kline
Franz Kline (May 23, 1910 – May 13, 1962) was an American painter. He is associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s and 1950s. Kline, along with other action painters like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, John Ferren, and Lee Krasner, as well as local poets, dancers, and musicians, came to be known as the informal group, the New York School. Although he explored the same innovations to painting as the other artists in this group, Kline's work is distinct in itself and has been revered since the 1950s. Jackson Pollock
Paul Jackson Pollock (; January 28, 1912August 11, 1956) was an American painter. A major figure in the abstract expressionist movement, Pollock was widely noticed for his "Drip painting, drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was called all-over painting and action painting, since he covered the entire canvas and used the force of his whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dancing style. This extreme form of abstraction divided critics: some praised the immediacy of the creation, while others derided the random effects. A reclusive and volatile personality, Pollock struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. Georges Vantongerloo
Georges Vantongerloo (24 November 1886, Antwerp – 5 October 1965, Paris) was a Belgian sculptor, painter, designer of furniture and buildings, and founding member of the De Stijl group. Life From 1905 to 1909 Vantongerloo studied Fine Art at the Fine Art Academies in Antwerp and Brussels. Conscripted into World War I, he was wounded in a gas attack and discharged from the army in 1914. Lenore "Lee" Krasner (born Lena Krassner; October 27, 1908 – June 19, 1984) was an American painter and visual artist active primarily in New York whose work has been associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. She received her early academic training at the Women's Art School of Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design from 1928 to 1932.
