Muschelhaufen
''Muschelhaufen'' (heap of shells) was a German annual, originally combining literature and graphic arts. It was founded by Erik Martin from Viersen in 1969 and published – with an interruption of 11 years – until 2008, when the last issue came out (No. 47/48-2007/2008). History The annual replaced a small magazine that was published from 1962 – 1969 in the wake of the German Youth Movement. When the members finally spread all over the country, literature, arts and music became the main subjects of the review. In 1969 it got the new title and the ''Muschelhaufen'' was born. From 1975 to 1985 there was a publishing-break. Since 1993 only first publications were edited and each issue had an overboarding part of graphics, paintings, cartoons and photographs. Erik Martin (writer)
Erik Martin (12 January 1936 in Neuss – 25 April 2017) was a German writer, songwriter and composer of songs. He was the founder and editor of the literature and art magazine ''Muschelhaufen''. Life and work Erik Martin was the first-born son of Illa and Ernst J. Martin – both dentists and Dendrology, dendrologists; they were the founders of the Sequoiafarm Kaldenkirchen. His sister is the tree-and-bush expert Helge Breloer. Martin grew up in Kaldenkirchen, went to Aloisiuskolleg in Bad Godesberg and graduated at Thomaeum High-School Kempen, Germany, Kempen. After studies in Aachen he worked as a teacher of German and Biology in Viersen, where he created schoolgardens and worked out environmental projects joining the German Waldjugend. In 1997 he received the Klaus-Gundelach-Prize for his merits concerning his environmental protection and his youth novel ''Fjellwanderung''. Theo Breuer (born 30 March 1956) is a German poet, essayist, editor, translator and publisher. Life and work Theo Breuer was born in Bürvenich, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany and educated at Cologne University where he studied German and English linguistics and literature. He has written many books of poetry and essays on contemporary literature since 1988. In collaboration with artists and poets in Canada, England, Italy, Japan, the US and many other countries, he has published experimental and visual poetry. In 2007, Redfoxpress (Dugort, Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland) published ''Word Theatre'', a selection of Breuer's visual poetry. Walter Bauer (writer)
Walter Bauer (November 4, 1904 – December 23, 1976) was a German-Canadian biographer, novelist and poet. Walter Bauer showed himself a promising poet in pre-Hitler Germany, but with the rise of the Nazis he found his poetry being banned. He became an elementary school teacher and after the war had high hopes for a literary life. However, in 1953, feeling the cynicism of the German Economic Miracle, he emigrated to Canada where, after a stint as a dishwasher, he became a professor in the German Department of the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario in 1954. He wrote six novels, two collections of poetry and four biographies (including one on Van Gogh and another on Grey Owl). He also wrote plays and essays. Lutz Rathenow
Lutz Rathenow (born 22 September 1952 in Jena) is a dissident German writer and poet who was haunted by the Secret Police until the German reunification. From then on, his fortunes changed, and he received several literary honors and awards. Life and work Born in Jena, Thuringia, which in 1952 was part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Rathenow studied at the University of Jena after serving in the military. In 1976 he was relegated because he was one of the students who protested against the expatriation of Wolf Biermann, a prominent German singer and songwriter. Moving to Berlin, Rathenow began to write, but he could not at all start his career as a free-lance writer. Peter Klusen
Peter Klusen (born 1951) is a German writer, translator and cartoonist. Life and work Peter Klusen was born in Mönchengladbach. He is a German writer and cartoonist. After studying at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and RWTH Aachen University (German language, journalism and social science) he worked as a teacher at FernUniversität Hagen, the only state funded distance education university in Germany, and Mönchengladbach Franz-Meyers High School. Up from 1980 he started writing plays for children and teenagers. His subjects are often the problems of outsiders and peer pressure as well as the formation and effects of prejudice. Günter Kunert
Günter Kunert (; 6 March 1929 – 21 September 2019) was a German writer. Based in East Berlin, he published poetry from 1947, supported by Bertold Brecht. After he had signed a petition against the deprivation of the citizenship of Wolf Biermann in 1976, he lost his SED membership, and moved to the West two years later. He is regarded as a versatile German writer who wrote short stories, essays, autobiographical works, film scripts and novels. He received international honorary doctorates and awards. Gertrude Degenhardt (born 1 October 1940) is a German artist, especially a lithographer and illustrator, based in Mainz. She illustrated the texts and albums of Franz Josef Degenhardt and other political writers and singers including François Villon, Liam O'Flaherty, Bertolt Brecht, and Wolf Biermann. Katrin Askan
Katrin Askan (1966) is a German author. She was born in East Germany, but in 1986, three years before the changes that finally adumbrated an end to the one-party dictatorship, she managed to escape to the west. A (slightly) fictionalised version of the long build-up to the event and of the escape itself, with a powerful resonance of authenticity, constitutes the core of her 2000 novel "Aus dem Schneider". Christoph Meckel (12 June 1935 – 29 January 2020) was a German author and graphic artist. He received awards for his works which connect illustrations with the written text, sometimes texts by others. James Krüss
James Krüss (31 May 1926 – 2 August 1997) was a German writer of children's literature, children's and picture books, illustrator, poet, dramatist, scriptwriter, translator, and collector of children's poems and folk songs. For his contribution as a children's writer he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1968. Biography Krüss was born as the son of the electrician Ludwig Krüss and his wife Margaretha Krüss (born Friedrichs) in Heligoland. Jan Wagner (poet)
Jan Wagner (born 18 October 1971) is a German poet, essayist and translator, recipient of the Georg Büchner Prize and Leipzig Book Fair Prize. Life Wagner was born in Hamburg, and grew up north of it, in the small town of Ahrensburg in Schleswig-Holstein. He studied English (Anglistics) in Hamburg, Dublin and Berlin, and graduated from Hamburg University, and at Trinity College, Dublin.
