Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. ''Musa'' is one of two or three genera in the family Musaceae. The genus includes flowering plants producing edible bananas and plantains. Around 70 species of ''Musa'' are known, with a broad variety of uses. Though they grow as high as trees, banana and plantain plants are not woody and their apparent " stem" is made up of the bases of the huge leaf stalks. Thus, they are technically gigantic herbaceous plants. The University of Calicut, also known as Calicut University, is a state-run public university headquartered at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district of the state of Kerala, India. Mamiyil Sabu (Dr M. Sabu) formerly Head of the Department of Botany, University of Calicut and currently working as CSIR-Emeritus Scientist at Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences, Kozhikode district, Kerala, India.
