Murphy Glacier is a glacier on Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, flowing generally westward to Orford Cliff and merging with Wilkinson Glacier before terminating in Lallemand Fjord. It was mapped from air photos taken by Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE) (1956–57). It was named for Thomas L. Glacier
A glacier (; ) is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight. A glacier forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often centuries. It acquires distinguishing features, such as crevasses and seracs, as it slowly flows and deforms under stresses induced by its weight. As it moves, it abrades rock and debris from its substrate to create landforms such as cirques, moraines, or fjords. Although a glacier may flow into a body of water, it forms only on land and is distinct from the much thinner sea ice and lake ice that form on the surface of bodies of water. Pernik Peninsula
Pernik Peninsula ( bg, полуостров Перник, poluostrov Pernik, ) is the ice-covered peninsula projecting 40 km in northwest direction from Loubet Coast on the west side of Antarctic Peninsula. It is bounded by Darbel Bay to the northeast, Lallemand Fjord to the west and Crystal Sound to the northwest, and its northern part is dominated by Protector Heights. Loubet Coast
Loubet Coast is the portion of the west coast of Graham Land in Antarctic Peninsula, extending 158 km between Cape Bellue to the northeast and Bourgeois Fjord to the southwest. South of Loubet Coast is Fallières Coast, north is Graham Coast. The coast is named after Émile Loubet, President of France during the exploration of the area by the French Antarctic Expedition under Jean-Baptiste Charcot in January 1905. Graham Land
Graham Land is the portion of the Antarctic Peninsula that lies north of a line joining Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz. This description of Graham Land is consistent with the 1964 agreement between the British Antarctic Place-names Committee and the US Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names, in which the name "Antarctic Peninsula" was approved for the major peninsula of Antarctica, and the names Graham Land and Palmer Land for the northern and southern portions, respectively. The line dividing them is roughly 69 degrees south. Graham Land is named after Sir James R. G. Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of John Biscoe's exploration of the west side of Graham Land in 1832. Orford Cliff
Orford Cliff () is a coastal cliff of Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, overlooking the east side of Lallemand Fjord just east of Andresen Island. Surveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1956. Named for Michael J.H. Orford, FIDS assistant surveyor at Detaille Island in 1956, a member of the party which found a route from Detaille Island to Avery Plateau, via Orford Cliff and Murphy Glacier. Orford Cliff Refuge Orford Cliff Refuge () was a British refuge located in the Lallemand Fjord on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The refuge, managed by the British Antarctic Survey, was inaugurated on 21 February 1957 and remained active intermittently until 10 January 1959. Lallemand Fjord
The Lallemand Fjord () is a fjord located east of Arrowsmith Peninsula and west of Pernik Peninsula on Loubet Coast on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica. It begins at Sharp Glacier and runs over 48 km roughly south to north, flowing into Crystal Sound near Detaille Island, and entered between Roux Island and Holdfast Point. The Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE) was an aerial survey of the Falkland Islands Dependencies and the Antarctic peninsula which took place in the 1955–56 and 1956–57 southern summers. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is the United Kingdom's national polar research institute. It has a dual purpose, to conduct polar science, enabling better understanding of global issues, and to provide an active presence in the Antarctic on behalf of the UK. Detaille Island
Detaille Island is a small island off the northern end of the Arrowsmith Peninsula in Graham Land, Antarctica. From 1956 to 1959 it was home to "Base W" of the British Antarctic Survey and closed after the end of the International Geophysical Year (IGY). It is now often visited by Antarctic cruise ships but is otherwise unoccupied. Thanks to the men's hasty departure and the necessity that they take little with them, Base W is an eerily preserved time capsule of 1950s Antarctic life. The base had been intended to host dog-sledging survey parties which would cross the sea ice to the nearby Antarctic Peninsula, but the ice was dangerously unstable. When Base W was vacated, heavy sea ice prevented resupply ship ''Biscoe'' from approaching closer than , despite the assistance of two U.S. icebreakers.
