Muratti
The Muratti Vase is an annual men's and women's football competition, inaugurated in 1905, between teams representing the Channel Islands of Alderney, Guernsey and Jersey. The larger islands of Guernsey and Jersey dominate the competition, with Alderney's sole match final championship victory occurring in 1920. History Since its inception, the competition has been interrupted only between 1915–1919 and 1940–1946 due to the First and Second World Wars. The teams wear their island colours of green and white (Guernsey) and red and white (Jersey) and blue and white (Alderney). The competition is sponsored by Hepburns Insurance and now includes Ladies', under 21s and an under 18s competition for men. The tournament consists of a semi-final and a final. Before the Second World War the draw for the semi-final rotated between the three islands, but since then Jersey and Guernsey have taken turns to play Alderney in the semi. Muratti (cigarette Brand)
Muratti is a brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Philip Morris International. There are many different Muratti variants introduced over the years, and they were also sold as ''Ambassador'', ''Ariston'', ''Cabinet'', ''Gentry'', ''Iplic'', ''Peer'' and ''Regent''. History The company was founded in Istanbul by Greek tobacco trader Basil Muratoglu, in 1821. He moved the company to Western Europe in the 1880s, after the Ottoman Empire monopolized the tobacco industry—in 1885 the company was established in Berlin/Germany, and in 1887 in London/Great Britain. Until 1939, the German army administration seized the entire production site in Köpenicker Straße. Muratti had to move to commander road number 20. Three years later, however, the Nazis completely shut down the factory, and at the end of the war, all the tobacco in the city was consumed. Guernsey Official Football Team
The Guernsey official football team is the official football team representing the island of Guernsey (which is not part of the United Kingdom, but is a Crown dependency) in non-FIFA international football matches. It is not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA, and therefore cannot compete for the FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Football Championship. Men's team Since 1905, they have competed with Alderney and Jersey for the Muratti Vase, winning it 46 times, most recently in 2017. The players are selected from the Guernsey leagues, with the top Division being the FNB Priaulx League. Guernsey Football went under a transformation at the start of the 2011–12 season when Guernsey F.C. was created, which led to the vast majority of the top Island players competing in the English non-league pyramid system for the very first time. Springfield Stadium
Springfield Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in St Helier, Jersey, set in a public park. History The meadow area on which the showground was laid out gained the name of Springfield from the vernacular hydronymy. The land borders Le Grand Douet and Rouge Bouillon (modern Jèrriais spelling: Rouoge Bouoillon: red spring) and floods regularly. Significant flooding was recorded in 1881, 1977 and 1980. The Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society was founded in 1833 and had held its Jersey cattle shows at various venues until its jubilee in 1883, when it was decided to acquire a ground of its own for the holding of exhibitions and the examination of cattle for registration. Footes Lane
Footes Lane is a multi-use sports stadium in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey and is the main sports venue on the island. It has a capacity of 5,000 with 720 seated. The stadium is the national stadium of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Usage The stadium is used for a number of sports and is used by the rugby union team, Guernsey RFC who play in National League 2 South following promotion in the 2019-20 season. The stadium also hosts Guernsey's annual Siam Cup games against Jersey Reds when the match is played in Guernsey. Maya Le Tissier (born 18 April 2002) is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for Manchester United of the English Women's Super League (WSL). She has been capped internationally by England. Club career St. Martins A.C. Le Tissier grew up on the channel island of Guernsey. Flag Of Guernsey
The flag of Guernsey was adopted in 1985 and consists of the red Saint George's Cross with an additional gold Norman cross within it. The creation was prompted by confusion at international sporting events over competitors from Guernsey and England using the same flag. It was designed by the Guernsey Flag Investigation Committee led by Deputy Bailiff Sir Graham Dorey. The flag was first unveiled on the island on 15 February 1985. The gold cross represents William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy (who became, after the conquest, William I of England).
