Municipality Of Žirovnica
The Municipality of Žirovnica (; ) is a municipality in Slovenia. The seat of the municipality is the village of Breznica. In the Završnica Valley, behind the Reber range that overlooks the villages, the first public hydroelectric plant in Slovenia was built in 1914. In 1952, after building a 60 m dam (the highest dam in Slovenia to date) in the Kavčke Gorge, a second hydroelectric plant opened in nearby Moste. This was the first hydroelectric plant to operate on the Sava River. Geography It is located in the traditional Upper Carniola region, on the southern slope of the Karawanks mountain range, along the border with Austria (Carinthia). The municipality borders the municipalities of Jesenice to the west, Bled and Radovljica to the south, and Tržič to the east as well as Austria to the north. The Municipality of Bled (; ) is a municipality in northwestern Slovenia in the Upper Carniola region. The seat of the municipality is the town of Bled, located on the shores of Lake Bled. The area is a popular Resort town, tourist destination. The Municipality of Bled was established in October 1994. Matija Čop
Matija Čop (; 26 January 1797 – 6 July 1835), also known in German as Matthias Tschop, was a Slovene linguist, polyglot, literary historian and critic. Biography Čop was born in the small northern Carniolan town of Žirovnica, in what was then the Habsburg monarchy (now in Slovenia), into a relatively wealthy peasant family. He was sent to Ljubljana for primary and secondary schooling and then studied philosophy at the lyceums of Ljubljana and Vienna for three years. In 1817, he returned from Vienna and attended a priest seminary until 1820, when he left it to become a secondary school teacher in Rijeka, Croatia. In 1822 he moved to Lviv (then also part of the Austrian Empire), when he started working as a teacher at the local lyceum, but was soon promoted to assistant professor at Lviv University. Zabreznica (; ) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia, is a country in Central Europe. Vrba, Žirovnica
Vrba (; ) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniolan region of Slovenia. It was first mentioned in written sources from 1247 and is a typical example of a compact Alpine village. The Slovene national poet France Prešeren, who was born in the village, dedicated the sonnet " O Vrba" to the village, the first of his '' Sonnets of Misfortune''. History In 1940, the Prešeren House and the village were filmed for the black and white sound documentary '' O, Vrba''. It was directed by and produced in 1941. Due to the communist-imposed ban on artistic productions, it was released only in 1945. The house was presented by Finžgar, and Oton Župančič read the poem "O Vrba". Selo Pri Žirovnici
Selo pri Žirovnici () is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It lies on the slopes of the Reber range between Žirovnica and Zabreznica and is more or less a continuous settlement with Zabreznica. There are open fields south of the village. Name The name of the settlement was changed from ''Selo'' to ''Selo pri Žirovnici'' in 1953. Church The church of St. Cantius was first mentioned in 1468 and is a Baroque structure with a belfry from 1764, but there is evidence that it replaced an earlier Romanesque structure. Rodine, Žirovnica
Rodine (; ) is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. In recent years, the settlement has grown northwards, further up the hill side and westwards to reach right to the outskirts of Smokuč. There are open fields and forests to the east and south of the village. History There is evidence of Roman settlement in the area of Rodine with the remains of a Roman farm (villa rustica) in Ključi. This was partially excavated in 1959, and finds show that it was settled from the late 1st century AD until the 5th century. Remains of three buildings and a number of small objects were found during excavation. Some are now on display at the Jalen House. Church The village church is the Church of St. Clement. Moste, Žirovnica
Moste () is one of ten villages in the Municipality of Žirovnica in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. Hydroelectric plant Moste is the location of the Moste Hydroelectric Plant, the first hydro-electric power plant to have been built on the Sava Dolinka River. It has a high dam (the highest dam in Slovenia to date) in the Kavčke Gorge, right before the Sava is joined by the Radovna. The plant was built using forced labor by political prisoners from camps set up after the Second World War. Church The church in the centre of the village is dedicated to Saint Martin. It is a single-aisle church with late Gothic features and frescoes on the interior dating to 1430. The altar dates to 1638 and the remaining church furnishings are from the 19th century.
