Mumbles (community)
Mumbles is a community in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, covering the district of the same name. The community covers the areas of Blackpill, Langland, Limeslade, Mayals, Mumbles Head, Newton, Norton, Oystermouth, Thistleboon and West Cross. The population in 2011 was 16,600 making it the second biggest community in Swansea. Governance Local administration was carried out by Oystermouth Urban District Council until 1918, when powers were handed to Swansea Council. Mumbles Community Council was created in 1983 to restore a level of local administration to the district. The community elects a community council of 18 councillors elected from the community wards of Mayals, Newton, Oystermouth and West Cross. Community (Wales)
A community () is a division of land that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England but, unlike English parishes, communities cover the whole of Wales. A community council is a public representative body in Great Britain. In England they may be statutory parish councils by another name, under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007, or they may be non-statutory bodies. West Cross
West Cross is a suburban area of Swansea, Wales, located to the south of Swansea city centre, near Mumbles falling within the West Cross ward. Description A high majority of the homes are Council built, but many have been sold to the occupiers in the Council's right to buy policy scheme during the 1970s and 1980s. Along with homes being bought, the Council had to upgrade a number of the houses during the 1980s, as they were of the BISF (British Iron and Steel Federation) prefabricated design and had to be brought up to current safety standards by removing asbestos insulation and replacing the structure rods. Along with the Council designed/built homes, private homes were built (by home development companies) from the 1950s and 1960s onwards. Oystermouth
Oystermouth ( Welsh: ''Ystumllwynarth'') is a village (and former electoral ward) in the district of Mumbles, Swansea, Wales. It is part of the Mumbles community (civil parish). Etymology Samuel Lewis and Nicholas Carlisle both state that the original Welsh name was "Caer Tawy" (the Caer of the river Tawe). Thomas Morgan noted that the modern Welsh name, Ystumllwynarth was also found in early Medieval Welsh literature. Morgan derives this name from ''Ystum Lluarth'' which he defined as a "place of entrenchment on a hill" adding that the English name Oystermouth, is both a corruption of the existing Welsh name and a folk etymology connected to the locality's famous oyster beds.
