Multi-National Division – Baghdad
Multi-National Division – Baghdad (MND-B) was a division of Multi-National Force – Iraq during the Iraq War, responsible for controlling brigades in greater Baghdad that were responsible for areas within the city itself. It was headquartered by the 1st Cavalry Division and based at Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq, north of Baghdad International Airport. The brigades controlled by the 1st Cavalry Division included ones north of the city at Taji, in the northeastern part in Adhamiya, at Camp Liberty in the west, in the Green Zone, on the southern outskirts, and in the southeast near Rasheed Airfield. A division is a large military unit or Formation (military), formation, usually consisting of between 10,000 and 25,000 soldiers. The Green Zone () is the most common name for the International Zone of Baghdad. It is a area in the Karkh, Karkh district of central Baghdad, Iraq. It is the chief government precinct and the seat of the Iraqi government. The Iraq War troop surge of 2007, commonly known as the troop surge, or simply the surge, refers to the George W. Bush administration's 2007 increase in the number of U.S. military combat troops in Iraq in order to provide security to Baghdad and Al Anbar Governorate. The surge was developed under the working title "The New Way Forward" and was announced in January 2007 by Bush during a television speech. Bush ordered the deployment of more than 20,000 soldiers into Iraq (five additional brigades), and sent the majority of them into Baghdad. Adhamiya
Al-Adhamiyah (; ), also Azamiya, is a neighborhood and east-central district of the city of Baghdad, Iraq. It is one of nine administrative districts in Baghdad. Adhamiyah neighborhood, or the shrine district, is located north-west of the city center and is an upscale area. This is not to be confused with a much larger Adhamiyah district of Baghdad, which is nearly 9 times larger and has as many times the inhabitants. The shrine area, Adhamyiah proper, has about 100,000 inhabitants. This area was 95% Sunni, 5% Shi'ite before 2003 and the Iraqi invasion. Multi-National Force – Iraq
The Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF–I), often referred to as the Coalition forces, was a U.S.-led military command during the Iraq War from 2004 to 2009. The vast majority of MNF-I was made up of United States Army forces. However it also supervised British, Australian, Polish, Spanish, and other countries' forces. It replaced the previous force, Combined Joint Task Force 7, on 15 May 2004. It was significantly reinforced during the Iraq War troop surge of 2007.
