National Assembly (Zambia)
The National Assembly is Zambia's unicameral legislative body. Between 1972 and 1990, Zambia was a one-party state with the United National Independence Party (UNIP) as the sole legal party. The current National Assembly, formed following elections held on 11 August 2016, has a total of 166 members. 156 members are directly elected in single-member Constituency, constituencies using the simple plurality (or first-past-the-post) system. Eight additional seats are filled through President of Zambia, presidential appointment. The Speaker, first deputy speaker and the Vice President of Zambia, Vice President are also granted a seat in the assembly. 2001 Zambian General Election
General elections were held in Zambia on 27 December 2001 to elect a President and National Assembly. The result was a victory for the ruling Movement for Multi-Party Democracy, which won 69 of the 150 National Assembly seats and whose candidate, Levy Mwanawasa, won the presidential vote. The results of the elections were disputed by main opposition parties, including the United Party for National Development, which many observers claimed had won the elections. Both domestic and international election monitors cited serious irregularities with the campaign and election, including vote rigging, flawed voter registration, unequal and biased media coverage, and the MMD's improper use of state resources. In January 2002, three opposition candidates petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn Mwanawasa's victory. 2021 Zambian General Election
General elections were held in Zambia on 12 August 2021 to elect the President, National Assembly, mayors, council chairs and councillors. Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development was elected president, defeating incumbent Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front. 2016 Zambian General Election
General elections were held in Zambia on 11 August 2016 to elect the President and National Assembly. A constitutional referendum was held alongside the elections, with proposals to amend the bill of rights and Article 79. President Edgar Lungu, previously elected in January 2015 to finish the term of Michael Sata, who died in office, was re-elected for a full five-year term with a majority of the vote in the first round, defeating opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema. Lungu's Patriotic Front also won a majority in the National Assembly for the first time, winning 80 of the 156 elected seats. The Patriotic Front (PF) is a social democratic political party in Zambia. The party was formed by Michael Sata as a breakaway party of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 2001 after the President Frederick Chiluba nominated Levy Mwanawasa as its presidential candidate for 2001 elections. The party's main base of support are usually the youth and poor people in urban centres (although this support wavered starting in 2021), as well as members of the Bemba people in Copperbelt Province and Lusaka Province. After several years, the PF gained power in the 2011 general elections, and governed until the 2021 elections. Formation The Patriotic Front was formed as a political party in 2001. Patricia Mulasikwanda
Patricia Mulasikwanda (born 22 September 1955) is a Zambian politician who served as Minister of Sports, Youth, and Child Development and later Minister of Gender and Women in Development. She served as the Mulobezi member of Parliament from July 2015 to August 2016. Education Mulasikwanda holds a Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing and GCE O Level. Career Prior to her political career, Mulasikwanda worked as a nurse. Patricia Mulasikwanda was Deputy Minister of Sports, Youth and Child Development under President Levy Mwanawasa before being named the new Minister of Gender and Women in Development in April 2007. Under President Rupiah Banda, Mulasikwanda did not retain her ministry after leaving UNIP for MMD. The then MMD deputy national secretary Jeff Kaande described her as a "frustrated politician." United Party For National Development
The United Party for National Development (UPND) is a social liberal political party in Zambia, led by Hakainde Hichilema, the current president of the country. The party is an observer member of the Africa Liberal Network. History The UPND was established in December 1998 and was initially led by Anderson Mazoka, who had left the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) shortly beforehand. Mazoka was the party's presidential candidate for the 2001 general elections, finishing second with 27% of the vote, less than 2% behind the winner Levy Mwanawasa of the MMD. Hastings Sililo
Hastings () is a large seaside town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, east to the county town of Lewes and south east of London.
