Mugina, Kigali
Mugina is a sector and town in Kamonyi District, Southern Province, Rwanda and a suburb of Kigali. The town had a population of 14,755 in the 2012 census, while the sector had a population of 45,894 in the 2022 census. History During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, a major massacre occurred in Mugina, during which houses with women and children inside were burned. In total, thousands of people had been killed. On 3 October 2023, Pierre-Claver Karangwa was arrested in the Netherlands for his role in this massacre. Rwandan Genocide
The Rwandan genocide occurred between 7 April and 15 July 1994 during the Rwandan Civil War. During this period of around 100 days, members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, as well as some moderate Hutu and Twa, were killed by armed Hutu militias. The most widely accepted scholarly estimates are around 500,000 to 662,000 Tutsi deaths. In 1990, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a rebel group composed mostly of Tutsi refugees, invaded northern Rwanda from their base in Uganda, initiating the Rwandan Civil War. Over the course of the next three years, neither side was able to gain a decisive advantage. Augustin Bizimungu (born 28 August 1952) is a former general of the Rwandan Armed Forces (FAR). On 16 April 1994, at the start of the Rwandan genocide, he was appointed chief of staff of the army and promoted to the rank of major general. Biography Bizimungu was born in Byumba préfecture, Mukaranje Commune, Mugina Secteur, Nyange Cellule, Rwanda. An ethnic Hutu, Bizimungu held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the FAR on 6 April 1994. Some days later, in the wake of Déogratias Nsabimana's death alongside Juvénal Habyarimana, Bizimungu was promoted to major general and appointed as chief of staff of the Rwandan Army of the FAR, replacing Marcel Gatsinzi. Ildephonse Hategekimana
Ildephonse Hategekimana (born 1 February 1964) is a Rwandan soldier who participated in the Rwandan genocide. An ethnic Hutu, Hategekimana was born on 1 February 1964 in Mugina commune in Gitarama prefecture. In 1994, he held the rank of lieutenant in the Rwandan Armed Forces, and was the commander of the Ngoma camp in Butare prefecture. On 27 November 2000, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) issued an indictment against Hategekimana, charging him with "genocide, or in the alternative complicity in genocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide, and crimes against humanity." Hategekimana was the chief of security in a Rwandan refugee camp in Loukoléla in Congo-Brazzaville for some years prior to his arrest.
