Mufhasa
Mufhasa (foaled 7 September 2004), was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse who won a number of Group races in New Zealand and Australia in a career stretching from 2007 to 2013. He was known as King Mufhasa in Australia. Mufhasa was trained by Stephen McKee and ridden in the majority of his races by Samantha Spratt. Towards the end of his career he was trained by Bruce Wallace and he was cared for throughout his career by strapper Amy Doran. His win in the 2012 Windsor Park Plate was his tenth and final Group 1 victory. Mufhasa was voted the New Zealand Horse of the Year for the 2009 and 2012 seasons. In 2021 he was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Waikato Sprint
The Waikato Sprint currently run as the BCD Group Sprint is a Group One, Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run at Te Rapa Racecourse in Hamilton, New Zealand, Hamilton in early February. It is currently held on the same day as the Group 1 New Zealand International Stakes, Herbie Dykes Stakes. The list of winners includes almost every top-class sprinter-miler to have raced in New Zealand in the last three decades, and is highlighted by the back-to-back victories by champion mare Sunline in 2001-02. The well-performed gelding Mufhasa (horse), Mufhasa won the 2009 and 2011 events (also winning the Telegraph Handicap in both of these years) and was also 2nd in 2012 and 3rd in 2010. The Arrowfield Stud Plate is a New Zealand Thoroughbred horse race run at Hastings Racecourse in Hawke's Bay. The race is registered as the Horlicks Plate and has been previously known as: * the Windsor Park Plate. In 2022 the race sponsor and naming rights changed from the Windsor Park Stud to the Arrowfield Stud. * the Stoney Bridge Stakes from 2004 to 2008. * the Glenmorgan Generous Stakes, in 2003, when it was raced at Otaki. * the Glenmorgan Hawkes Bay Challenge Stakes. The Tarzino Trophy also known as the Challenge Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run at Hastings Racecourse in Hawke's Bay and is New Zealand's first Group One race of the season. It is run over a distance of 1400m in September. New Zealand Racing Hall Of Fame
The New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame recognises and honours those whose achievements have enriched the New Zealand thoroughbred horse racing industry. History The Hall of Fame's first group of honorees were inducted in 2006, and inductions are held every other year. The inaugural chairman was Gerald Fell. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Induction dinner scheduled for 3 May 2020 was postponed. At that stage, three inductees had been announced: Mufhasa, James McDonald and Sir Peter Vela. The dinner was held on 2 May 2021 and nine new inductees were welcomed. Telegraph Handicap
The Telegraph Handicap is a Group One New Zealand horse race contested by the Wellington Racing Club at Trentham Racecourse in Upper Hutt. It was traditionally raced during the Wellington Cup carnival in mid-January, however from 2025 it has been shifted to earlier in January. The Telegraph Handicap, raced over 1200 metres, and the Railway Stakes contested at Ellerslie Racecourse are New Zealand's premier sprint races. In the late 1980s the race was called the Wrightson Handicap. Pierro (foaled 5 October 2009) is a retired Australian thoroughbred racehorse who is now standing at stud. A bay horse, he stands at 16.1hh. He was from the fifth crop of the champion racehorse and stallion Lonhro out of the dam Miss Rite Note (IRE)(by Daylami). Pierro had a short racing career, racing in just two seasons and retiring to stud as a three-year-old. He ran in a total of 14 races, with 11 wins and 3 placings, including 5 Group 1 wins. His distances ranged from 1200m to 2040m. He was bred at Musk Creek Farm and sold for $230,000 in the Magic Millions sale. He was an unbeaten Triple Crown winner at 2 years, and a dual Group 1 winner at 3 years, earning him the title of both the highest rated Australian juvenile since 1977, and the highest rated 3yo sprinter in the world in 2013. Vosne Romanee (foaled 17 September 2002) is a three-time Group 1 winning New Zealand Horse. Vosne Romanee was named after a wine region in France and was owned by Ian and Alana Smart Trust. He was trained by Jeff Lynds. Buddy Lammas and Opie Bosson were regular riders. He rose to prominence as a seven-year-old in the 2009/10 season. His most significant win came as one of several longshots in the Kelt Capital Stakes in October 2009, and followed up with wins in the Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day and the New Zealand Stakes in March 2010.
