Ostracod
Ostracods, or ostracodes, are a Class (biology), class of the crustacean, Crustacea (class Ostracoda), sometimes known as seed shrimp. Some 33,000 species (only 13,000 of which are extant taxon, extant) have been identified,Brandão, S.N.; Antonietto, L.S; Nery, D.G.; Santos, S.G.; Karanovic, I. (2023). World Ostracoda Database. Accessed at https://www.marinespecies.org/ostracoda on 2023-09-12. grouped into 7 valid orders. They are small crustaceans, typically around in size, but varying from , the latter in the case of the marine ''Gigantocypris.'' The largest known freshwater species is ''Megalocypris princeps'', which reach 8 mm in length. In most cases, their bodies are flattened from side to side and protected by a bivalve-like valve or "shell" made of chitin, and often calcium carbonate. The family Entocytheridae and many planktonic forms do not have calcium carbonate. The hinge of the two valves is in the upper (dorsal) region of the body. Ostracods are grouped toget ...

Zoologist
Zoology ( , ) is the scientific study of animals. Its studies include the structure, embryology, classification, habits, and distribution of all animals, both living and extinct, and how they interact with their ecosystems. Zoology is one of the primary branches of biology. The term is derived from Ancient Greek , ('animal'), and , ('knowledge', 'study'). Although humans have always been interested in the natural history of the animals they saw around them, and used this knowledge to domesticate certain species, the formal study of zoology can be said to have originated with Aristotle. He viewed animals as living organisms, studied their structure and development, and considered their adaptations to their surroundings and the function of their parts. Modern zoology has its origins during the Renaissance and early modern period, with Carl Linnaeus, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Hooke, Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and many others. The study of animals has largely mov ...

Gustav Wilhelm Müller
Christian Gustav Wilhelm Müller (17 February 1857 in Mühlberg near Erfurt – 18 February 1940) was a German zoologist specializing in Ostracoda. In 1895 he succeeded Carl Eduard Adolph Gerstaecker as director of the zoological museum at Greifswald, a position he maintained until 1923. He was the taxonomic authority of numerous taxa in Ostracoda; a few examples being the subfamily Conchoeciinae and the genera ''Archiconchoecia'', ''Cytherois'' and ''Stenocypria''. In 1965, the genus '' Muellerina'' Bassiouni (family Hemicytheridae) was named in his honor. Written works * ''Neue Cypridiniden'', 1891 - New Cypridinidae. * ''Die Ostracoden des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres-Abschnitte'', 1894 - Ostracods from the Gulf of Naples and adjacent marine areas. * ''Ostracoda'', 1894 - Ostracoda. * ''Deutschlands Süswasser-Ostracoden'', 1900 - German freshwater ostracods. * ''Die Ostracoden der Siboga-Expedition'', 1906 - Ostracoda from the Siboga Expedition. * ''Ostra ...

Podocopida Genera
The Podocopida are an order of ostracods in the subclass Podocopa. It is the most diverse of the five orders of ostracods, and the only one with freshwater species. The group also has a rich fossil record. The superfamily Cytheroidea in the suborder Cytherocopina consists of non-swimming crawlers and burrowers. Most species are marine, but at least seven extant lineages have independently adapted to freshwater. The largest freshwater family is Limnocytheridae, with about 150 species in 20 genera. Taxonomy The following suborders and unassigned taxa are contained in the order Podocopida: * Superfamily Carbonitacea * Suborder Bairdiocopina * Suborder Cypridocopina * Suborder Cytherocopina * Suborder Darwinulocopina * Suborder Sigilliocopina See also * Cyprididae Cyprididae is "the most diverse group of freshwater ostracods". It contains over 1000 species, which represents 50% of the known species of freshwater ostracods (other speciose families include Candonidae, ...
