Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich (27 March 192727 April 2007) was a Russian Cello, cellist and conducting, conductor. In addition to his interpretations and technique, he was well known for both inspiring and commissioning new works, which enlarged the cello repertoire more than any cellist before or since. Mistislaw, also known as Mstislav (died after 1018), was an Wends, Elbe Slavic Fürst, prince of the Nakonids, Nakonid lineage and ruled over the Obotrites in what is now Mecklenburg and eastern Holstein from 990/995 to 1018. The Nakonids were among the most powerful Christian Slavic princes in the second half of the 10th century. In the retinue of the Duchy of Saxony, Saxon Duke Bernard I, Duke of Saxony, Bernhard I, Mistislaw participated in Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor, Otto II's campaign against the Saracen, Saracens in southern Italy in 982, from which he returned with only a few survivors. In the subsequent Slavic revolt of 983, the Nakonids relinquished their sovereignty over several Obotrite branches to the victorious Lutici. Mstislaw or Mstislavl is a town in Mogilev Region, Belarus. It serves as the administrative center of Mstsislaw District. In 2009, its population was 10,804. As of 2024, it has a population of 10,019. History Mstislavl was first mentioned in the Ipatiev Chronicle in 1156. It was initially a part of the Principality of Smolensk, but had become the capital of the Principality of Mstislavl by 1180. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Mstislavsky princely family. Pyotr Mstislavets is believed to have been born in Mstislavl. In 1377, the town joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with the free will of its residents.
