Movement Research
Movement Research is a non-profit organization based in New York City that offers dance classes, workshops, residencies and performance opportunities for artists. It is dedicated to the implementation of free and low-cost programs geared towards experimentation. Founded in 1978 under the name “The School for Movement Research & Construction,” the organization began to host performances and workshops periodically in 1979 and was incorporated as a not-for profit organization in 1980. With over 11 interrelated core programs, Movement Research annually serves over 16,000 participants interactions, including artists, students, and audience members. The organization is currently operating three studios in the newly renovated 122 Community Center and holds space in other parts of the city as well. Ishmael Houston-Jones
Ishmael Houston-Jones (born 1951) is a choreographer, author, performer, teacher, curator, and arts advocate known for his improvisational dance and language work. His work has been performed in New York City, across the United States, in Europe, Canada, Australia and Latin America. Houston-Jones and Fred Holland shared a 1984 New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award for their work ''Cowboys, Dreams and Ladders'' performed at The Kitchen and he shared another Bessie Award in 2011 with writer Dennis Cooper and composer Chris Cochrane for the 2010 revival of their 1985 collaboration, ''THEM''. Dance Education
Dance education is a practice whereby students are taught a broad understanding of dance as a form of art and who are trained professionally in many different genres of dance. Dance education consists of specialized dancers who conduct original research for teaching others how to dance. Currently, dance itself is considered an allied form of art and music, thus dance in formal education is closely knit with these disciplines. Susan Rethorst
Susan Rethorst is an American choreographer, writer, and teacher. Biography Susan Rethorst was born in Washington, D.C., in 1951. She began creating modern dance works in 1975. Rethorst studied dance with Judith Dunn (of Judson Dance Theater) at Bennington College and graduated in 1974. Some of performance practices have included "dailiness" and "stealing". Rethorst's work has been presented by the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, and other locations throughout the United States. Lisa Nelson
Lisa Nelson is an American dance-maker, improviser, videographer, and collaborative artist. She was born in New York City in 1949 and currently lives in Northern Vermont. Dancing life Lisa Nelson began her training in traditional modern dance and ballet as a child at the Juilliard School in New York City and then Bennington College in Vermont. In the 1970s, she became interested in diverse approaches to dance improvisation, including performing with Daniel Nagrin’s Workgroup in 1971-72. Lucy Sexton
Lucy Sexton is a performer, director and choreographer who performs as Factress and is one half of Dancenoise. She is a Bessie Award winner, and later served as the organization's executive director before stepping down in 2020. Dancenoise
Dancenoise is an American performance art duo created by Anne Iobst and Lucy Sexton. Dancenoise entered the New York and Washington, D.C., art and club scene in 1983, performing at venues such as WOW Café, the Pyramid, 8BC, Performance Space 122, Franklin Furnace, The Kitchen, La Mama, Danspace Project, and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut. Their work has also been presented around Europe as well as at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Sally Banes
Sally Rachel Banes (October 9, 1950 – June 14, 2020) was a notable dance historian, writer, and critic. Life, education, and performance career Born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., Banes studied dance, and particularly ballet, throughout her childhood. She attended the University of Chicago and graduated in 1972 with an interdisciplinary degree in criticism, art, and theater. While at college, she worked as a lighting assistant and wardrobe mistress. She also belonged to a group known as The Collective. Joining in 1970, Banes became one of several actors who met several times a week to collaborate on work. These collectively written theater pieces were performed in workshops as well as public performances. After graduating college, Banes continued to live and work in Chicago.
