Sybil Bauer
Sybil Lorina Bauer (September 18, 1903 – January 31, 1927) was an American competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder. She represented the United States at the 1924 Summer Olympics, where she won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke. Bauer was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Norwegian immigrant parents. She graduated from Schurz High School in Chicago. Afterward, she attended Northwestern University in nearby Evanston, Illinois. From 1921 to 1926, she set 23 world records in women's swimming, mostly in backstroke events. During a 1922 meet in Bermuda, she also became the first woman to break a men's record, finishing the 440-yard backstroke in a time of 6:24.8 (about four seconds ahead of the old mark). However, that record was unofficial, since it took place at an unsanctioned contest. Harry Juul
Earl Harold Juul (May 21, 1893 January 4, 1942) was a professional baseball player who was pitcher for the Brooklyn Tip-Tops of the Federal League in 1914. It was his only season at the Major League Baseball. He pitched in nine games, throwing 29 innings, with an ERA of 6.21. Niels Juul
Niels Juul (April 27, 1859 – December 4, 1929) was a state senator and U.S. Representative from Illinois. He was born and raised in Denmark. Biography Juul was born in Randers in Midtjylland, Denmark. Juul attended the public school (realskole) in Randers. He emigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago, Illinois, in 1880. He engaged in the publishing business. He studied law, and graduated from the law department of Lake Forest University in 1898. He was admitted to the bar in 1899 and commenced practice in Chicago. He was an alternate delegate to 1892 Republican National Convention from Illinois. He served as a member of the Illinois Senate from 1898 to 1914. He served as assistant attorney of the Sanitary District of Chicago from 1907 to 1911. Juul was elected as a Republican from Illinois's 7th congressional district to the Sixty-fifth and Sixty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1917 - March 3, 1921). Barney Ross
Barney Ross (born Dov-Ber "Beryl" David Rosofsky; December 23, 1909 – January 17, 1967) was an American professional boxer. Ross became a world champion in three weight divisions and was a decorated veteran of World War II. Early life Dov-Ber (or Beryl) Rosofsky was born in New York City to Isidore "Itchik" Rosofsky and Sarah Epstein Rosofsky. His father was a Talmudic scholar who had emigrated to America from his native Brest-Litovsk after barely surviving a pogrom. The family then moved from New York to Chicago. Isidore became a rabbi and owner of a small vegetable shop in Chicago's Maxwell Street neighborhood, a vibrant Jewish ghetto akin to the New York's Lower East Side of the 1920s and '30s. Dov-Ber was being raised to follow in his footsteps.
