Mount Monashee
Mount Monashee is a summit in British Columbia. At an elevation of 3274 meters (10,741 feet), it is the highest point in the Monashee Mountains. Mount Monashee was first summited by Arnold Wexler, Sterling Hendricks, and Donald Hubbard in 1952, during a trip through the range wherein they also summited Mount Hallam and Dominion Mountain for the first times, and found a new path up Mount Lempriere. Mount Monashee is the type locality of a formerly recognized subspecies of American pika. The Monashees American pika was no longer recognized as a distinct subspecies in 2010 after studies in genetic markers, call dialects, and skull measurements done by David Hafner and Andrew Smith showed there was mingling of pika populations in British Columbia. The Monashee Mountains are a mountain range lying mostly in British Columbia, Canada, extending into the U.S. state of Washington. They stretch from north to south and from east to west. They are a sub-range of the Columbia Mountains. The highest summit is Mount Monashee, which reaches . The name is from the Scottish Gaelic ''monadh'' and ''sìth,'' meaning "moor" and "peace". Geography The Monashee Mountains are limited on the east by the Columbia River and Arrow Lakes, beyond which lie the Selkirk Mountains. They are limited on the west by the upper North Thompson River and the Interior Plateau. The American pika (''Ochotona princeps''), a diurnal species of pika, is found in the mountains of western North America, usually in boulder fields at or above the tree line. They are herbivorous, smaller relatives of rabbits and hares. Pikas have two different ways of foraging; they either directly consume food or they cache food in piles for the winter (haying).
