Mount Madonna
Mount Madonna is a prominent peak located near the southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains in southwest Santa Clara County, California. The iconic landmark is surrounded by a county park, and is viewable along U.S. Route 101 in South Santa Clara Valley, and California State Route 152 near Watsonville in south Santa Cruz County. History In the late 19th-century, cattle baron Henry Miller built a summer home near the summit. Mount Madonna County Park Mount Madonna County Park is one of 28 Santa Clara County Parks. The park surrounds the peak, with the east side facing Santa Clara Valley and the west side facing Monterey Bay. The park offers hiking and equestrian activities along its trail system, as well as an archery range and an amphitheater. Facilities for picnicking and overnight camping are also provided. Santa Cruz Mountains
The Santa Cruz Mountains ( Mutsun Ohlone: Mak-sah-re-jah, "Sharp Ridged Mountain of the Eagle" or "People of the Eagle Mountain") are a mountain range in central and Northern California, United States, constituting a part of the Pacific Coast Ranges. They form a ridge down the San Francisco Peninsula, south of San Francisco. State Route 152 (SR 152) is a state highway that runs from east to west near the middle of the U.S. state of California from State Route 1 in Watsonville to State Route 99 southeast of Merced. Its western portion (which is also known as Pacheco Pass Road and Pacheco Pass Highway) provides access to and from Interstate 5 toward Southern California for motorists in or near Gilroy and San Jose. Henry Miller (rancher)
Henry Miller (July 21, 1827 – October 14, 1916) was a German-American ranching, rancher known as the "Cattle King of California" who at one point in the late 19th century was one of the largest land-owners in the United States. Life and work Born in Brackenheim, Duchy of Württemberg as Heinrich Albrecht Kreiser (Kreyser), he emigrated to New York City in 1846, where he worked as a butcher. He moved to California in 1850 under the name Henry Miller, a name borrowed from the non-transferable steamer ticket he had purchased from a friend in New York. Miller built up a thriving butcher business in San Francisco, later going into partnership with Charles Lux, also a German immigrant and a former competitor, in 1858.
