Mount Lugano
Mount Lugano ( da, Lugano Bjerg) is a mountain in eastern Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. Google Earth History This peak was named ''Monte Lugano'', after the town of Lugano in Switzerland, by Swiss geologist Eugen Wegmann (1896 - 1982) at the time of Lauge Koch's 1931-34 Three-year Expedition to East Greenland. Louise Boyd had previously used the temporary names "Scoop Mountain" and "C. Mountain" in her 1931 Greenland expedition. Mount Lugano was first climbed by Eugen Wegmann, together with fellow Swiss geologist Augusto Gansser (1910 – 2012), on 11 August 1934. According to an interview he gave in 1939 to the magazine ''Illustrazione Ticinese'', Wegmann allegedly was overcome by nostalgia for pleasant Lugano, standing hungry and thirsty in the harsh polar weather at the summit of the mountain. Gletscherland
Gletscherland, meaning "Glacier Land", is a peninsula in King Christian X Land, East Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. History This peninsula was named during the Three-year Expedition to East Greenland owing to it being largely glaciated. The name "Canton Land" has also been used. Geography True to its name, Gletscherland is largely glaciated, with many ice caps and glaciers. It is located southwest of Suess Land, northwest of Lyell Land, and southeast of Goodenoughland. Three-year Expedition To East Greenland
The Three-year Expedition ( da, Treårsekspeditionen) was an exploratory expedition to East Greenland that lasted from 1931 to 1934 financed by the Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish state. The expedition included aerial surveys. Many geographic features in East Greenland were mapped and named during the expedition. Eskimonaes station was used as a wintering base by the Three-year Expedition to East Greenland. History The expedition was led by Lauge Koch. Ice Cap
In glaciology, an ice cap is a mass of ice that covers less than of land area (usually covering a highland area). Larger ice masses covering more than are termed ice sheets. Description Ice caps are not constrained by topographical features (i.e., they will lie over the top of mountains). By contrast, ice masses of similar size that ''are'' constrained by topographical features are known as ice fields. The ''dome'' of an ice cap is usually centred on the highest point of a massif. Augusto Gansser
Augusto Gansser-Biaggi (28 October 1910 – 9 January 2012) was a Swiss geologist who specialised in the geology of the Himalayas. He was born in Milan. Louise Arner Boyd
Louise Arner Boyd (September 16, 1887 – September 14, 1972) was an American explorer of Greenland and the Arctic, who wrote extensively of her scientific expeditions, and became the first woman to fly over the North Pole in 1955, after privately chartering a DC-4 and crew that included aviation pioneers Thor Solberg and Paul Mlinar. Lauge Koch
Lauge Koch (5 July 1892 – 5 June 1964) was a Danish geologist and Arctic explorer. Biography Lauge Koch was born in 1892 to Karl and Elisabeth Koch. His development as a scientist was greatly influenced by his father's second cousin Johan Peter Koch - a polar explorer, a member of several Greenland expeditions, including Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen's and Alfred Wegener's (in the latter's expedition (1912-1913) to cross Greenland, he led a sledging party).
