Mount Cuthbert
Mount Cuthbert is a former copper mining town in the locality of Three Rivers, Shire of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. It is now a ghost town. History Mount Cuthbert was one of a string of mining towns created in north-west Queensland (other examples being Duchess and Selwyn) by Melbourne investors eager to profit from high copper prices in the early 20th century. A railway had been opened to the town and copper smelters were operating by 1917, and by 1918 the population was recorded as 750 people. Some of the workers in Mount Cuthbert at the time were Russian and affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World. Mount Cuthbert State School opened on 1917 and closed on 1924. A fall in the world price of copper in 1920 badly affected the local economy, and by 1921 only 267 people remained. By 1927 the settlement was a ghost town, and the railway line was closed in 1949. Selwyn, Queensland
Selwyn is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. Selwyn is now an abandoned mining town. In the the locality of Selwyn had a population of 50 people. History Selwyn takes its name from the Selwyn Range, which was named in turn after Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn, a geologist who was Director of the Geological Survey of Victoria from 1852 to 1869. It was formerly known as Mount Elliott after the prospector James Elliott who discovered copper and gold in the area in 1889. Mount Elliott Provisional School opened on 1908. On 1 January 1909 it became Mount Elliott State School. In 1912 it was renamed Selwyn State School. It closed circa 1936. On 15 December 1910 the Selwyn railway line opened to service the Hampden and Mount Elliott mines. It was a branch of the Great Northern Railway and ran south from Cloncurry to Selwyn. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.
