Mount Barnard (California)
Mount Barnard is a mountain in the U.S. state of California, and has the dubious distinction of being the highest thirteener, a peak between in elevation, in the United States. It is located on the Sierra Crest The Sierra Crest is a roughly generally north-to-south ridge, ridgeline that demarcates the broad west and narrow east slopes of the Sierra Nevada and that extends as far east as the Sierra's escarpment, topographic front (e.g., Diamond Mountain ... and straddles the boundary between Tulare and Inyo counties about southwest of Mount Williamson, the second-highest peak in the state; Mount Barnard is the twelfth-highest. The first ascent was by W. L. Hunter, John Hunter, William Hunter and C. Mulholland on September 25, 1892. They named the peak in honor of E. E. Barnard, a noted astronomer. Edward Emerson Barnard
Edward Emerson Barnard (December 16, 1857 – February 6, 1923) was an American astronomer. He was commonly known as E. E. Barnard, and was recognized as a gifted observational astronomer. He is best known for his discovery of the high proper motion of Barnard's Star in 1916, which is named in his honor. Early life Barnard was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 16, 1857, to Reuben Barnard and Elizabeth Jane Barnard (''née'' Haywood), and had one brother. His father died three months before his birth, so he grew up in an impoverished family and did not receive much in the way of formal education. His first interest was in the field of photography, and he became a photographer's assistant at the age of nine. He later developed an interest in astronomy. Mount Williamson
Mount Williamson, at an elevation of , is the second-highest mountain in both the Sierra Nevada (U.S.), Sierra Nevada range and the state of California, and the sixth-highest peak in the contiguous United States. Geography Williamson stands in the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest. It is located approximately north of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous U.S., and about southwest of Shepherd Pass, the nearest trail access. The closest town is Independence, California, about to the north-north-east. It lies about east of the Sierra Crest, which forms the western edge of the Owens Valley. In mountaineering in the United States, a thirteener (abbreviated 13er) is a mountain that exceeds above mean sea level, similar to the more familiar "fourteeners," which exceed . In most instances, "thirteeners" refers only to those peaks between 13,000 and 13,999 feet in elevation. The importance of thirteeners is greatest in Colorado, which has the majority of such peaks in North America with over 600 of them. Despite the large number of peaks, over 20 peak bagging, peak baggers have reported climbing all of Colorado's thirteeners.
