Mottley (other)
Mottley is a surname of English origin strongly associated with Ireland. Its roots are obscure, with some French attributes to the Norman Conquest of 1066, others to place names in England. Mottley is very frequently spelled as ''Motley'' and the two spellings are often incorrectly used interchangeably, causing some confusion. In general, Mottley tends to be Catholic, while ''Motley'' tends to be Protestant and more related to England. However, Mottley is listed in the Irish Catholic convert rolls of the mid 1700s which required Catholics in Ireland to adhere to English rule. Mottley apparently arrived in Ireland from England during Oliver Cromwell's 1649 Irish conquests and concentrated in Counties Carlow, Laois, Wicklow. In the 1916 Irish Easter uprising, a Private W. Ernest Deighton Mottley CBE (11 May 1907 – 27 April 1973) was a Barbadian politician, leader of the Barbados National Party, and first mayor of Bridgetown (1959). He was a member of the House of Assembly of Barbados from 1946 to 1971. He was friends with Errol Barrow, though after the election of 1961, Mottley became Leader of the Opposition to Barrow's Barbados Labour Party government. Eva Henderson Mottley (24 October 1953 – 14 February 1985) was a Barbadian-born British actress. She played Bella O'Reilly in the television drama '' Widows'', and Corinne Tulser, wife of Denzil Tulser in '' Only Fools and Horses''. Early life Mottley was born into a family of politicians in Barbados in 1953. Her grandfather, Ernest Mottley, was the first mayor of Bridgetown, while her cousin, Mia Mottley, was elected Prime Minister of Barbados in 2018. She was raised in Nigeria and England. John Mottley (1692–1750) was an English writer, known as a dramatist, biographer, and compiler of jokes. Life He was the son of Colonel Thomas Mottley, a Jacobite adherent of James II in his exile, who entered the service of Louis XIV, and was killed at the battle of Turin in 1706; his mother was Dionisia, daughter of John Guise of Ablode Court, Gloucestershire. John was born in London, was educated at Archbishop Thomas Tenison's grammar school in the parish of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and obtained a clerkship in the excise office in 1708. Mia Amor Mottley, (born 1 October 1965) is a Barbadian politician and attorney who has served as the eighth prime minister of Barbados since 2018 and as Leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008. Mottley is the first woman to hold either position. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system, following constitutional changes she introduced that abolished the country's constitutional monarchy. Mottley has been the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Saint Michael North East since 1994. Wendell Adrian Mottley ORTT (born 2 July 1941) is a Trinidad and Tobago economist, politician and athlete. Mottley served as Senator and member of the House of Representatives with the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament and was Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1995. He was a Ivy League sprinter, winning two Olympic medals in 1964. Early life and education Mottley was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He was the youngest of four brothers who were all runners. As a youngster, he began to run in competitions sponsored local oil companies. He attended Queen's Royal College, an elite public high school in Port of Spain.
