Motorstadion (Abensberg)
The Wack Hofmeister Stadium formerly the Altes Stadion Abensberg (the Old Stadium) is a motorcycle speedway and association football stadium located slightly east of the centre of Abensberg in Germany. It hosts the speedway team MSC Abensberg and the football team TSV Abensberg 1862. History The stadium has hosted international matches for the West Germany national speedway team and in 1964, held the Speedway World Team Cup final. Also referred to as the Motorstadion Abensberg, the venue hosted the 1985 Individual Speedway Junior European Championship. It was won by Per Jonsson on 14 July 1985, who later became a world champion. The most prestigious speedway event to be held at the track was the first ever Speedway Grand Prix of Germany in 1995, which formed part of the World Championship. Abensberg
Abensberg () is a town in the Lower Bavarian Districts of Germany, district of Kelheim (district), Kelheim, in Bavaria, Germany, lying around southwest of Regensburg, east of Ingolstadt, northwest of Landshut and north of Munich. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). The West Germany national speedway team were one of the teams that competed in international team motorcycle speedway. History The West German speedway team competed in the inaugural Speedway World Team Cup in 1960, finishing second in the Central European Round. The following year in 1961, the East Germany national speedway team competed in their first World Cup and competed as a separate nation from West Germany. In 1977, West Germany won a bronze medal in the Speedway World Pairs Championship but they struggled to progress through the World Cup rounds and it was not until the 1981 Speedway World Team Cup that they finally reached a final. Another appearance in the final came the following year in 1982. Speedway World Team Cup
The Speedway World Team Cup was an annual motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year in different countries. The competition started in 1960 and was replaced with the Speedway World Cup in 2001. Format From 1960 until 1985, each team consisted of four riders and a reserve. A final meeting was held after qualifying rounds, the winner being decided on total points scored in that final meeting. In 1986, the teams that qualified for the 'final' raced three meetings, the winner of each meeting being awarded three points, second place awarded two points, and third place awarded a point. The total points gained over the three meetings determined the champion. In 1987, the three meeting system was used again, but this time the aggregate points scored by the individual riders were added together to determine the champion. 1988 saw the championship revert to the original format. Per Jonsson
Per Christer Jonsson (born 21 March 1966 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a former speedway rider who won the Speedway World Championship in 1990, and finished runner-up in 1992. He earned 65 international caps for the Sweden national speedway team and also represented Sweden in the World Team Cup on seven occasions between 1985 and 1993. Career Jonsson came to prominence after helping his first club Getingarna win the Swedish Speedway Team Championship in 1982. He signed for his first British club the Reading Racers in 1984 and began racing for them during the 1984 British League season. His career took off after he won the 1985 Individual Speedway Junior European Championship at Abensberg, West Germany. Tommy Knudsen
Tommy Knudsen (born 9 November 1961 in Roager, Denmark) is a former Motorcycle speedway rider who won eight Speedway World Team Cups, and two World Pairs. He earned 81 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. He is not to be confused with Tom P. Knudsen (born 1968), another rider from the period. Career Knudsen first became known when he won the Danish Under-16 Championships of 1975 and 1976 before becoming the Danish Under-21 Champion in 1978. Knudsen started racing in the United Kingdom during second half meetings in 1978. He was signed up by Coventry Bees in 1979 and was touted as a future champion. Knudsen won the 1980 Individual Speedway Junior European Championship and recorded an 8.10 average for Coventry during the 1980 British League season. Josef Hofmeister
Josef Hofmeister nicknamed Wack Hofmeister (born 17 June 1934) is a former motorcycle rider from Germany, who competed in Grasstrack, Longtrack and motorcycle speedway. He competed in six World Longtrack Championship Finals and won a hat-trick of titles between 1958 and 1960. Josef was also a World Speedway finalist on four occasion. Career Hofmeister started his career in 1949 in the youth class and retired 1963 at just 29 years of age. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he was the first German star of international motorcycle racing. He was a three time winner of the Individual Speedway Long Track World Championship or European Championship as it was called, when he won it in 1958, 1959 and 1960. In 1957, he reached his first world final, making his way through the rounds to compete in the 1957 Individual Speedway World Championship.
